I've never had cable or sky so we don't have it at home. I clearly remember staying over at my best friends in the late 80's and when her brother was out for the weekend we would sneak in to his room and watch mtv. i was exposed to great music, beavis and butthead etc...there was nothing like that for me, that could or was allowed to watch at home and since i was watching it sneakily, it was all the sweeter.
when i worked at the BPI, it was on in reception all day. i think they just have a reel that's an hour long and they play it all fucking day. it further goes to show how 'alternative' music as labelled by the press, isn't that anymore. alternative music nowadays is literally unheard of. nme doesn't write about alternative acts anymore, theire cover stars are the 'indie' stars that are also featured on weekend tv, in the gossip pages of the tabloids and who have a song on every free cover mounted cd on every music periodical.
music press and mtv are dire reflections of each other. bollocks. they couldn't be irreverent of they boiled simon amstell and mark lamarr and drank them as soup for a month.
i can well believe that the only decent videos are shown in the twilight hours BUT it is maybe wise to reiterate the point that i found it brilliant when i was a CHILD. same way that i found nme and melody maker brilliant when i was a young teeneager.
adults, particularly adults that frequent this forum are too cynical anyways, are you all saying that if they played better stuff you would watch it more often? i thiunk you would in the short term but as the exposure to the music you love made those artists bigger and popular with the 'mainstream' you'd only start hating again!!
you're old. get on with it and start hanging out in the specialist section of your local record store. stop whinging about mtv. they don't care, you're no longer their target audience doh!
we're turning into fusty old moaning pensioners about 30 years to soon.
