I always figured that Lloyd was playing rhythm to Verlaine's lead in Television until I saw them live. most guitarists i know lack rhythm. they have as much rhythm as the 1,2,3,4 hi-hat. which is to say, not interesting.

i play rhythm bass guitar.

ex models...now that's some rhythm guitar.

edit: james brown's various guitarists got rhythm.

If you ever get a chance to check out the liner notes for the latest reissue of Marquee Moon, you'll find it details the different styles between Lloyd and Verlaine.
Verlaine approached things way more chaotically and played it by ear. Lloyd actually wrote, like full-on sheet music wrote, his leads, which is why he was able to double his parts in the studio note for note.
Neither of these guys has ever played a solo that made me want to say, "Shut the fuck up."

This is going to get worse before it gets any better.
