Am more often at wit's end these days than I'd like to be, and since attention to current events and the internet sometimes make things worse, once in a while I'll unwind with the kind of movie I maybe would've balked at in my twenties or thereabouts. To that end, if you're looking for a fun B-movie, you might wanna check out the new Fun City blu-ray of
Walking the Edge.
To reiterate, this is
NOT the kind of movie to be spoken of in the same breath as
Andrei Rublev or
Port of Shadows or whatever. You may have already seen it if you haunted video stores in the VHS days. It's a kind of sleazy/at times nasty/but ultimately enjoyable L.A. genre movie starring Robert Forster, Nancy Kwan, and a rather dad bod-ish Joe Spinell, as well one of the guys who played a biker in
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, who gets killed off early on. The new transfer looks great but overall the movie has similar production values to an episode of
Columbo or a pre-video/seventies porn film, or maybe an Eighties TV movie. It's got some witty moments though. Some say it was an influence on Tarantino as it features an ear severing scene, as well as Forster. It's also been cited as a proto-
Collateral, since Forster plays a cabbie who drives Kwan around town while she kills people (avenging her husband's death). I dunno...
Walking the Edge is no masterpiece, but if you're in a goofy mood, it might do the trick.
