Alright, thanks for the context. As an unaligned peacenik, I would respectfully disagree and argue that everything you have said is redolent of the very well tread Western strain of propaganda, similarly tinged with xenophobia, reductive reasoning, and half-truths (for example comparing Putin to Stalin, a guy who killed MILLIONS OF PEOPLE. In his dreams could Putin hope to scale those lofty heights). The simple facts are that the Russian Federation since its inception has taken part in about the same amount of aggressions as NATO as a whole, but significantly less than NATO members individually. So I agree that the tendency is for powerful countries to be horrible, untrustworthy and violent, but I don't see the Russians being an outlier here, and maintain that that chance of a Russian invasion of EU territories is at 0%. I agree with you that the cost/benefit analysis here for them does not pan out. They're a lot better off making real money with the MAGA bros. As for Poland, that is a good example....I'm honestly all ears as to emmanuelle's perception of Russian aggression against Poland.
Soviet media (controlled by kremlin) have been full of propaganda for decades now - the message is that west is degenerated and should be seen as the enemy, and every country from the former soviet block is a silly child who doesn't understand that surrounding it's independence to Russia is the best thing that could happen - straight out of Stalin's book. The concerns he is going to attack one of the neighboring countries were particularly loud here when Trump was first elected, I though myself Russia might try to attack one of the Baltic countries (Estonia) just to check whether NATO is not just on paper, and main reason for this not happening was just how expensive for Russia it might be. So there was no shock here when Ukraine was attacked 3 years ago - that's what country which wants it's empire status back does, and it wasn't even a new chapter for Russia - part of Ukraine was taken in 2012 even though Russia has guaranteed it will respect Ukraine's border and Independence in 1994 and in 2008 Russia attacked Georgia.
So to me there is no hysteria here at all, I would actually say chances another country being invaded within 10 years from when war in Ukraine is stopped or at least vastly reduced in scale after Russian army is rebuild and re-equipped are higher than lower. That was the course Russia is on and unfortunately US being on path towards isolationist and being led by president who seems to be in Putin's team (or simply is controlled by Putin because of the piss tape) isn't going to help.zorg wrote: Wed Feb 19, 2025 11:53 am
This is more what I hear from everybody. And I get it that Ukraine got the shaft here, and they have an absolute right to complain....but why is there this absolute hysteria about a Russian invasion in Europe?

I mean, so is invading a country as large, populous, culturally varied, and stubbornly independence-minded as Ukraine a full 23 years after it first broke from Russia's orbit. But a lot of that has more to do w/Russia bring relatively poor and corrupt and engaging in foolhardy, money-sucking military campaigns.
