I haven't had my hands on an FP10, but if it really is just a firepod by any other name, it'll need it's firmware updated on a windows box/mac first to run reliably, and it'll have really uneven frequency response. I doesn't necessarily sound bad at all, but if you're after transparency, shop elsewhere. I wish Motu would pull finger and put out for-real linux drivers. I've been told that the Terratec Phase 88 runs more reliably under linux using the FFADO/Freebob driver than it runs on windows or macs with the terratec driver, but that wouldn't be too hard. That's 2nd-hand info tho, and I wouldn't go looking for one myself. Possibly it or the FP10 are the pick of an average bunch.

In all honesty, firewire audio on linux is pretty shit.

yikes. any recommendations on an interface then? thanks for the info.

I am now typing this from within DSL booted with the toram option. My wife's comp runs faster than mine!

Now to figure out how to do the frugal install...

skinny honkie wrote:Dude, that repetitive disk spin-up sounds like either a borked drive or a borked disk - does the disk pass a media check/does the iso pass MD5?
If it's the drive, you could alternatively try a network install.

Ubuntu has a disk checking mechanism from the cd boot screen that I used before boot, and it showed no errors. I really think its the drive, b/c that's not the first time this has happened with a cd, just the first time its happened with a cd holding Linux that I was trying to install! :D

Just to underline the retardedly obvious, I'd like to make a special mention of the ubuntu forums - as far as technical support and suggestions in the linux field go, I have yet to encounter a better forum resource. The folk there are well mannered, well meaning, and very frequently well-informed. To anyone reading this considering a linux dabble via ubuntu, I can say that have yet to find a problem I couldn't resolve thru the information I've gotten from these people. But for me, it was the exceedingly low wanker quotient that sealed it.

As soon as I have the spare time to hash out the ability to use it...say a couple of days off work, maybe...I'm making the plunge into ubuntu. Unfortunately, I like playing games every once in awhile, so it's a dual-boot configuration until I get another computer pieced together.

Google 'cedega'. I haven't used it or anything, but my friend assures me it's good for most games.

And...

I am now typing this from with my xubuntu distribution using wireless networking WITH wpa_supplicant AND native bcm43xx drivers.

Zenwalk's site had a really good walkthrough for Linksys cards.

(oh yeah, and the issue was my cd rom drive - it finally died the other night, and the replacement installed xubuntu no problems)
