I mean still cameras, my friend. Security dudes were in a huff over me having an old film camera with detachable lenses. Other spectators had expensive new digital still cameras on the grounds, so it was a bit frustrating to get treated like a leper for one thing and then see tons of people with similar, more professional gear later. Inconsistent. I can't see any sense in banning people with still cameras in the day and age of cell phone technology, etc. What's funny is that I then ditched the lenses and had only the camera and one lens and it got in! Nice.
Anyone see the videos up on youtube?
Camera b.s. aside, the fest was a dream come true.
You must have angered someone somehow. Or maybe you just look like an asshole, that could be it you know. Not trying to be a dick but sometimes people will fuck with you just because they don't like the looks of you or how you carry yourself. A few friends of mine brought some pretty pro equipment to do interviews with showgoers for a documentary they are making on indie rockers, as we walked in they just held it up and asked 'is this ok?' and they just waved them thru. They never got bothered about it all day.

See? See? You people finally see what I'm talking about?
God bless those wonderful girls.

No fucking kidding.
I had a pretty great time - there were some travel problems on friday, so we missed the Shipping News..but Saturday made up for it. So many great bands!
I didn't get to meet anyone new in Chicago at all, though I did hold an umbrella for one person.

Holy shit. Dave. I had no idea. Does anyone know where he is, what he is doing? Shit. My ex-bandmate had a stroke as well, and I heard he was doing OK, but not great. But shit, Dave, man. That blog is bleak.

re: cameras, I think it depended on what entrance you used. I got in with no purse check Fri/Sat. on Throop St. but had to take my camera back to the car Sunday coming in off of Elston. I have a digi SLR.

the best moments for me were:
The New Year. perfect
Arcwelder. excellent
Shellac. best Shellac show i have been to, even after being up until 5:00 am the preceeding night, standing through 11 hrs of music before them and having a 350 pound schmuck radiating stink and heat while headbanging his greasy hair into my face and stepping on my feet (ouch).
The Ex. i never listened to this band. Now I most definately will. They were great.
I also enjoyed Scratch Acid and Big Black. I regret missing Killdozer and Man Or Astroman?

saturday!
not having grown up in chicago, but a small town back east, I have never seen David Yow perform. Whoa!
The Ex were probably my favorite of the day... and New Year, Scratch Acid, and Big Sheblack... and the other bands were probably great too but I was probably getting a beer or holding my breath in the port-o-let or telling greg how hsi pitching arm is going to be killing him unles he ices it down, to which he replied "i'm no pussy" or something like that.
Great, great social atmosphere. I usually can't really take big outdoor shows.

I asked specifically what the camera rule was, and was told "anything with a removable lens is not allowed, but any normal digital camera is okay". I don't think that's so unclear. A little weird, maybe, since you can get a >5 megapixel camera with plenty of zoom and it doesn't have a detachable lens...
But hey, this was an amazing weekend of rock show. If they told me I couldn't bring my glasses in because of their lenses, I woulda been alright with that. The show was unbelievably on-time, generally good-sounding, the crowds were very large Saturday but always managable... the bands were mostly all great.
So great, this weekend.
