However, I was hoping to use it in my drum room, and I might just go for the Cascade Designs ribbon special. The tax check cometh...

Czech out the price on the Fatheads

Also, check out this quote:
Special update: All Cascade Ribbon Microphones are Phantom Power safe.

Nice, huh? That means it's sleepy engineer/intern proof!

I think I may buy the fatheads this week. Fuck it. My drum room needs ribbons!
.

I'm going to watch the m130 and see how high it goes. I might bid on it if it stays reasonable. The cascades look really nice but I just bought a matched pair of Shinybox's last summer so I'm not looking for new ribbon pairs. I could always use another m380 or m130 or 74b if one pops up cheap.

Go for the fat heads. You can't go wrong at that price.

i'm watching the m130 too.

I dunno how those fat heads sound, but maybe it's a good idea to save a little bit more and buy something better? Though the design of these ribbons looks simple, so it's hard to go wrong there. But like I said, "looks..."

We have a set in the A room at Pigpen. They sound really excellent as room mics.

They offset the crispiness of the Neumann 184s we use for overheads nicely by providing some more tom and bass drum rumble.

They also bring out some of the fatness of a good snare.

Because they're ribbon mics and they are therefore somewhat fragile, they Fatheads stay in the A room, which is unfortunate for me, since the B room is my kingdom.

That's why I am going to buy my own pair.

I've used them a few times and I am sold.

Fuck it, putting that shit on the credit card. The GOLD ones.

We are all in this debt thing together and everyone needs to pitch in, right?

Ask not what your country can do for you, etc.

You could look into the tranny mod down the road when you have more scratch.

Here's a review of the Fat Head, so you don't have to take my word for it.

Tape Op gave the Fat Heads pretty high marks too.

If you're looking for a really dark, low end ribbon, from what I have read, you might also consider the Apex 205 mod as done by these guys. I was considering that pretty seriously, and may eventually use the Fatheads for overheads and put the Apexs out front to get the stoner/crust bass drum sounds that I am looking for.

Anybody here buy this? I was outbid. I tried to lowball it at $310. It ended up at $381. A good deal for this mic but not an exceptional steal in my opinion.

I almost bid on it. I was sitting there looking at it, thinking I could probably nail it for something relatively cheap. But then I decided I should make some more music before I extend my mic cabinet. Besides, I already have two very good ribbons.
