Will there be a return of the dexterous elephant avatar, Angus?

No.

It's kind of a cool story, how the elephant became a symbol of the Athletics franchise, starting in Philadelphia.

It involves Connie Mack, the guy who wore those 3-piece suits in the dugout.

It's kind of cool.

But no.

Didn't John McGraw call Philadelphia a white elephant? And Mack decided to make the team's logo a white elephant and put it on the unis?

I had no idea that this was a problem for him. He's managed to take care of business anyways. It was starting to show in his pitching...he was all over the place.

Braves are on a roll. Wait till we get Hampton, Hudson, Chipper and Thompson back.

Barry Zito was named AL Pitcher of the Month for July. He has won 8 straight starts. He recently commented that he is pitching "much better" now than he did when he won the Cy Young Award in 2002.

Will the Oakland Athletics sign Barry Zito to a long-term deal? He is currently with the team through next year only.

The Oakland Athletics have won the last 13 games Dan Haren has started (Haren is 8-0 in these starts). If they win in his next start, Haren will break the all-time Oakland record for games won in consecutive starts.

With several good outings in a row, Mark Mulder has lowered his ERA to 3.91. I followed his last start- he pitched against the offensively challenged, well-under-.500 LA Dodgers. He allowed only 2 earned runs, but was pulled before finishing the 6th inning (pitch count- 95). The Cardinals are really babying Mark Mulder.

Tim Hudson is off the DL, sporting a 3.57 ERA for the season. When the Braves came to San Francisco last month, Hudson was interviewed by several local hacks. Interestingly, he seemed rather unhappy with Leo Mazzone, the great Atlanta pitching coach. Mazzone is insistent that Braves pitchers locate pitches down and away, where Hudson has thrived on pitching in.

Every player Billy Beane acquired for Tim Hudson is currently lighting it up for the Athletics' AAA team, the Sacramento River Cats.
