Re: Significant Others and musical tastes

My wife hates Billy Corgan's voice, if 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' or 'Today' come on SiriusXM in the car I take the initiative and change it.
She can tolerate '1979' though. It seems to be one of those songs that even if you dislike the band, you like that song ('Everlong' is another one.)

She and I have both seen Blink-182 actually, different shows. We're both not really fans though. I saw them at a radio station fest just after Enema of the State came out, and she tagged along with some friends on that arena tour they did where all the tickets were like $20 or $25. I remember their stage banter was juvenile but amusing.

I can count on one hand the number of stadium shows I've been to. U2 once, Rolling Stones twice. None of them sucked.
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."

This was also my thought. Make a goal like "worst mismatch between wardrobe and age" or a bingo card ("band logo tattoo", "band logo Vans", etc) and have fun with it.

Me and mine overlap quite a bit. We like a lot of the same indie rock, metal, and electronic music. We both really love Berlin-era Bowie.
She is not into hiphop or truly abrasive noise music, but will tolerate them. I don't care for a lot of the more normal/emo alternative music that she likes (Guster, Bright Eyes, Muse, Garbage) or showtunes but I'll tolerate them.

One of the worst shows I've ever paid for was one she wanted to see. She's into this Russian pagan metal band called Arkona. If y'all don't know, pagan metal is 50% death metal breakdowns and 50% metal-inflected "folk" music with a polka feel and a woodwind instrument. It's the kind of show where one should expect:
- themed band costumes
- at least two "walls of death" in the pit per set
- minimum 3 utilikilts
Anyway, Arkona is mostly fine for this genre, but there was an opener with an aggressively dumb name (Polkadot Cadaver) that broke the rules by playing for almost an hour, ending with a cover of "Billie Jean".

Even this was pretty retrospectively funny, like immediately after walking out of the venue. So not the worst thing. It was a band from Russia, so it wasn't cheap, but it wasn't too crazy expensive either.

without going into too much boring detail - we good.

she doesn't like the harder faster and/or druggy stuff that I like, but she'll tolerate it in the car. she likes the more generic indy rock from the 80s and 90s, Concrete Blonde and Belly and the Goo Goo Dolls. Which I can certainly tolerate.

Our second date was a Jawbox show followed by a late night at CBGBs, so we good.

No offense to your spouse, but Guster is the shittest band I've ever heard.
We're headed for social anarchy when people start pissing on bookstores.

If Elizabeth walks into the room while Rush is playing, I am expected to turn it off ASAP. She has a zero-tolerance policy with Rush.
Oh, I lied--zero tolerance Grateful Dead. I listened to the Dead satellite radio channel quite a bit for a while, when I was puzzling it out, so it would sometimes come on when we started the car to go someplace. It was like I had stuck a toothpick in her ear. Occasionally in months that followed I would switch to that channel for a "joke" but it was not considered funny.
