I just worked with a guy who's family in the Carolinas was run outta business by these assholes. I can't remember how Wal Mart got brought up, but man that dude was fucking pissed. Then someone commented "Well, I go there because it's cheap-ya know for toilet paper and sometimes sporting goods." Dude tore into a rampage and quickly schooled her. He remarked that his dad's sporting goods store was run outta biz cuz tards all shopped at wal mart. "You don't get it do you?" He railed. "Keep shopping there and put yerself out of a job!!!" At least this woman ended up feeling stupid. I'll bet she still shops there though.

Target donates quite a bit of money to schools. They also have on site security. I will shop there.

Yeah, they pay pretty well, they start you out at $9 something here, and within a few months you'll get up to $10 or so. Most places around here start you at $5.15; Target starts you out at $6. Factories start you at $11 or $12. I'm sure it's not like that everywhere (and my town is a shitty hick town), but man for a kid in high school to go work at Wal-Mart that's not terribly awful or anything. And it's not like there's many options around here, unfortunately.

I still hate this town every day that I have to drive by two Wal-Marts in a town of 40,000 people; two Wal-Marts, three Starbucks, nine Subways, three McDonalds.. worst town ever.

Actually Avondale Estates is a very nice upper middle class community. It's misleading of them to say this store is in Avondale as it's barely on the southern edge. It would be more realistic to call it ' South DeKalb county'. The street it's on, Memorial Dr., is pretty much a dividing line between lower middle class and the dirt poor which may explain the 10,000 applicants.

This particular store was fought against for years and quite a few times the citizen's groups won against the company. But in the end, the location was really nothing but a dead mall where no one would dare do business anyway and Wal-Mart eventually won. Something tells me this store won't be one of those that you have to "get all dressed up for" either.

Fuck fucking Wal-Mart right in the pee-hole.

I had a part-time job during high school at a fresh fish market that had a few stores in the city and suburbs. When I graduated and went full-time, I joined the union and jumped from $5 an hour to $8.81--in 1985 dollars.

For the next 2 years until I went back to school, I had enough money to get a reliable used car, buy records at Rolling Stones before it turned to shit, buy food and beer, and save all the money I needed to pay for the upcoming two years of school. Of course, I lived at home during all this time, but there were other guys I worked with who were able to support themselves and pay rent, etc. at this pay scale. Not so today for adults working at Hel-Mart or any other megastore, the exception being Costco.

Aside from the shitty pay issue, just fuck them for being evil dicks that train their management to be evil dicks. I have an older relative who works at one, and her latest story of assholery was about one of the other ladies she works with who came back from lunch and committed the crime of punching in one minute late. The 26-year old assistant manager sent her home for the day and told her she had to write an essay explaining "why they should keep her" to be turned in the next day, like she was in fucking 4th grade or something. I'm not fucking kidding. Fuck them fuck them fuck them.

Went to a Wal Mart in Indiana for the first time a year ago, but they had the ammo / hunting section RIGHT next to the children's toys section. I never went back.

Rick Reuben wrote:10,000 outside Atlanta line up for 350 jobs at a new Wal Mart. Okay, sure, the government's 5% unemployment figure is totally reliable...

I'm sure you know this, but I'll extrapolate for those who might not--they arrive at the unemployment figure by figuring in those who are looking for work while receiving unemployment benefits (I don't know about other states, but in Ohio you have to apply for at least one job a week while on unemployment). They don't count those who are just plain not working. So 5% unemployment rate =/= 5% of Americans aren't working.

There's an article in Rolling Stone about how Wal-Mart is gonna have a 5 tier pricing on CDs. Unfortunately, the article isn't available online and a bunch of sites have mistakenly put up a link to an article from October 2004. Here is an article from earlier this month that sums up what the Rolling Stone article said.
