Most places around here start you at $5.15; Target starts you out at $6. Factories start you at $11 or $12. I'm sure it's not like that everywhere (and my town is a shitty hick town), but man for a kid in high school to go work at Wal-Mart that's not terribly awful or anything.
Fuck fucking Wal-Mart right in the pee-hole.
I had a part-time job during high school at a fresh fish market that had a few stores in the city and suburbs. When I graduated and went full-time, I joined the union and jumped from $5 an hour to $8.81--in 1985 dollars.
For the next 2 years until I went back to school, I had enough money to get a reliable used car, buy records at
Rolling Stones before it turned to shit, buy food and beer, and save all the money I needed to pay for the upcoming two years of school. Of course, I lived at home during all this time, but there were other guys I worked with who were able to support themselves and pay rent, etc. at this pay scale. Not so today for adults working at Hel-Mart or any other megastore, the exception being
Costco.
Aside from the shitty pay issue, just fuck them for being evil dicks that train their management to be evil dicks. I have an older relative who works at one, and her latest story of assholery was about one of the other ladies she works with who came back from lunch and committed the crime of punching in one minute late. The 26-year old assistant manager sent her home for the day and told her she had to write an essay explaining "why they should keep her" to be turned in the next day, like she was in fucking 4th grade or something. I'm not fucking kidding. Fuck them fuck them fuck them.
