Was honestly real moved a few days ago to hear him say "MORE PIRATE" (aka "Scrappers") from his car seat.

The only other song that he's picked up on as much is "MORE ROBOT" by Kraftwerk.
that just made me tear up

“We’ll be pirates!”

My kids were also familiar with that Kraftwerk song. I’d randomly say “we are the robots” and then they would go “duuun dun dun dunnnnn” (in pitch)

My kids - late teens - are probably old enough now to appreciate “Prayer to God” in all of the ways it can be appreciated. I think it’s time soon.
Yuck, dude. There’s enough toxic masculinity already flying at your kids online from the manosphere. Your endorsement of that song will tell them it’s OK to think that way. I mean they’re your kids, but that shit is not for kids.

my kid went through a big black phase around 4-5 but he grew out of it. he probably would appreciate prayer to god on his own. he's not going to take it literally.
the girl, now 17, would probably skip it without much thought.

You realise Prayer to God is a story right? Was that you on Facebook telling me Steve was a pedo because of the Big Black tour diary insert? 😭

Honestly, I avoid beef with FMs but as Ozzy Osbourne said about Christian hysteria over his songs, “It’s just playing a part. No one attacks Vincent Price for the roles he plays in movies”.

Jonny Cash did not kill a man in Reno just to watch him die.

PJ Harvey did not murder a child under a bridge.

And mind your own business when it comes to what parents find acceptable for their children. Especially considering well adjusted and educated kids know the difference between fact and fiction. Unlike some adults evidently.

That was definitely NOT me. But it doesn't matter what the song is based on; the world is full of real atrocities carried out by jealous, vengeful men. Do you really think it's healthy to tell kids how cool a song is that glorifies this vengeful spiteful spirit? Especially kids who have allegedly experienced breakups recently, and who don't have a fully developed sense of proportion, of the future, or of self-confidence?

All respect due to Steve for his charitable works, his brilliant writing, his masterful playing and engineering, but "Prayer To God" is a cuck's song and if your kids are going to be exposed to it, at least let them find that shit on their own. Cosigning it as a parent just seems reckless as hell.

Has it ever occurred to you that the song is written in the voice of a sociopath and that exploring that as the theme for a work of fiction might be something an artist would wish to explore? Educating kids how fiction works is good for their long term development.

Different kids have different levels of understanding of adult themes. My kids watched Lord of the Rings when they were 10 because we wanted them to see a great film series based in my homeland but also so they could understand the difference between fictional violence and the real world. I have friends that haven’t let their 14 year olds see it.

As I said Jonny Cash wasn’t advocating murder.

Shielding your kids from the "atrocities of the artistic world", even though they have seen more fucked up things by the age of 12 than I have in my entire life is not really a healthy way to go about it.

I have this thing with my daughter where we send each other music that means/meant to us growing up. She sends me My Chemical Romance and video games shitty music and I love it. I sent her "Kerosene" yesterday with an explanation. And then she can google the shit out of it if she wants to.

Yes, I am divorced and don't see her very often. This is our thing.

Cool thread. Seems super respectful and rad to post a bunch of this stupid shit here where it could have worked literally anywhere else.

Gone a year. Seems far longer than that to me.

I kept a voicemail he left me for years and years, as silly as that sounds. It was destroyed when a garage I had some boxes in collapsed.

Feels very fucking wrong that he's gone and not totally sure it'll ever feel right (dying is natural, we're all gonna do it, but this one still feels fucked).

Yeah. Good point. But accusing Steve of misogyny for a song about a fictional character then accusing someone of being a shitty parent needed calling out.

Last post on the topic.
