Man, this thread is kinda like the tech forum - I don't have anything to add because I really don't know shit.

I wish I knew more about wine, though. I haven't historically been much of a drinker, but lately I've been thinking more and more about going to buy a few bottles for myself. I always feel so lost wondering what's "good".

Affordable wine is more consistent than it's ever been. A good way to learn is to try a few different types almost randomly, find one that stands out for you, and then try focusing on that particular grape or particular region, and go from there. The wine shop on Grand Ave. in your town, a few blocks east of Lexington, has a good selection and decent prices.

Oh, and Dara Moskowitz (such a great writer) writes a Twin Cities wine guide in City Pages once a year with local deals and recommendations, but also a lot of unintimidating information on wine in general.

Her essays from 2005 and especially 2004 are good primers.
