Hahaha...not that I'm aware of. They are pretty good at not steppin' all over it. Come to think of it, I don't remember even hearing a DJ at all during the show.

Recently I mentioned to my mother that a guy (formerly) in Dimmu Borgir shares our surname. She's on a listserv for Norwegian-as-a-second-language speakers and she said people sign up, like, daily saying they're Dimmu Borgir fans and want to understand the language. She was pretty disgusted.

I've only heard one track from the Karmanik Collection disc. It's a band that I've wanted to hear more of.

Not sure about Bodychoke. There are a lot of other good outfits, like Sophia, Coph Nia, Raison d'etre, etc. I hesitate to call most of them bands, since a lot of this type of stuff is just one person, in a studio, who rarely if ever perform live. I have seen BDN live, once, at the Empty Bottle in Chicago. That was a great show.

Puissance is another one I like a lot as well. CMI describes them as "apocalyptic martial music". Very funny stuff. Very tongue in cheek.

I don't consider Voivod black metal. Not even RRRRROOOOAAAARRRRRRR. Prog-thrash. Maximum.

Voivod, Venom, Mayhem, Sacrifice...hmmm. Delicious.

black metal doesn't have cookie monster vocals. it's less a growl and more a rasp or cackle.

basically, you take the death metal template:

- growling, grunting
- typical subjects: gore, mythology, mystical mumbo jumbo, the apocalypse, anti-christianity, nature's revenge
- low, tuned-down tremolo picking w/ distortion, usually palm-muted, one string at a time
- enough low-end to sound "brutal" while still sounding clear (difficult at the speeds often involved, so there isn't a lot of flexibility as to how you record it)
- dissonant "dark" intervals (tritones, some parallel minor harmony)
- sometimes some kind of mosh part
- fast and precise
- medium to kinda long songs
- from a handful of riffs per song to a different riff every two bars

and you alter it until it's like so:

- rasping, cackling
- typical subjects: anti-christianity, scandinavian nationalism, the cold, winter, wolves
- medium or high tremolo picking w/ distortion, NOT palm-muted, more than one string at a time resulting a buzzy sloppy mess
- low end and clarity are tossed out to window to explore things like lo-fi scalding treble and/or washy reverb that makes everything a blur -- much more flexible recording possiblities
- dissonant "dark" intervals with moooore parallel minor harmony
- no moshing allowed
- kinda fast and sloppy
- long to reeeealllly long songs
- from one riff per song to a handful
