this disc packs some of the most eloquent rhymes i have ever heard. RZA's production is the best of his career. If you only buy one Wu-tang album, this is the one you should get. (yes its better than 36 chambers)

I'm really glad my hip young friends have stopped trying to expose me to this B.S....I still expose them to my fave Old rawk crap, but only if they ask grampa punk "What's cool?", and I have a pile of records to listen to now, and I don't think the task of trying to appreciate new rap /hip hop/urban/ whatever music is in my future. Yuk.

Both EL-P and Cannibal Ox have new albums coming out (dropping!) in the next few months.

Another suggestion:

Granted, stuff like Bonobo, Amon Tobin, and Nufonia Must Fall push the envelope pretty far away from "rap" (though instrumental hip-hop and turntablisim still have a place in this list IMO), but on top of KRS and Gangstarr, you've got Jedi Mind Tricks, Immortal Technique, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Dead Prez, Celph Titled....all as rap as you can get.

And DJ Shadow + Cut Chemist is "NOT REALLY HIP-HOP"?? What exactly are you refrencing when you say "hip-hop"? And how can you get away with throwing Peanut Butter Wolf on your list, but bashing on Shadow?

First and absolutely foremost, I was in no way bashing DJ Shadow. I was making the point that, while his music has roots in turntablism and is most clearly influenced by hip hop, I don't consider his output to be hip hop. It's electronic music that sort of defies genre. I love DJ Shadow's music and am looking foreward to The Outsider very much, but I don't consider it hip hop. I put Peanut Butter Wolf on the list because nearly every song on My Vinyl Weighs a Ton has guest MCs. What I've heard of PBW's first release is mostly instrumental, which is why I listed the album that I listed.

I may have been incorrect about the DJ Shadow / Cut Chemist collab, as I haven't heard much Cut Chemist, but I'm under the impression that he is a DJ and/or beatmaker, and not an MC.

J Dilla's Donuts is another one of those borderline albums that may or may not be hip hop depending on who you ask. This still doesn't mean that I don't think it's one of the best albums of the year so far.

I suppose what this boils down to is how you define hip hop. The basis for my reply to that was primarily that Amon Tobin's Chaos Theory was the first thing on the list. Amon Tobin makes electronic music. He doesn't produce beats for people to rap over, and I don't think that Chaos Theory, of all of his albums has any relation to hiphop whatsoever.

Again, this doesn't mean I don't like the album. In fact, the case is quite the opposite.

Also, calling Criminal Minded a KRS One album without acknowledging Scott La Rock or that the album is actually credited to Boogie Down Productions is kindof retarded.

Out of all the hiphop I bought back when I started this thread, the winner by far has been Pete Rock and CL Smooth's "Mecca and the Soul Brother". I've listened to it about a zillion times. Love it.

i know that was an old post, but it appears there will never be another cannibal ox record. the solo vast aire and vordul records were really good though, even without el-p's beats.
