The Russian elites aren't all that different from the American elites. You seem to be claiming something else just b/c it involves the enemy of your enemy. "Desperation" was pretty low on Russia's list of reasons for invading the three countries it continues to occupy chunks of to this day. Not to mention all the puppet strings its government pulls in Central Asia (and until recently, Syria). "Imperialism" (b/c Russia remains and has been an unapologetic empire for centuries), greed (Black Sea oil, Donetsk coal, Caucasus minerals!), and billionaire boredom, on the other hand... Well, it's basically a similar beast to the one you're complaining about.

Agreed that none of this is binary. It's possible for the US to have shitty, warmongering foreign policy and for Russia to have an even shittier, even more warmongering one! Not mutually exclusive in the least. In fact, they seem to be getting more similar than I'd like since Trump's second term.
