Fuzz Pedal Advice

Two fuzz pedals in series can open up whole universes that neither alone are capable of. You'll probably want a noise gate with that, but its well worth experimenting with pedals that have vastly different characters, it certainly pushes the sound into "fuzz" very quickly and offers twice as many pots to tweak the sound. They don't need to be expensive, I'd go for a Rat as one of them with the Ruetz Mod (just clip one resistor) as it really opens up the gain curve and bass response.

Big muff is a classic.

Guyatone is really crazy fuzz I think it is based on either a superfuzz or fox fuzz. It is real nice.

Two in paralell or series is great a boost pedal before is good too.

Oh yea the big muffs now have transistors and are based on the earlier design I was wrong the IC thing was late period 80 EH big muffs and are not avalable.

Too bad you don't live in new york seems like everyone is moving and liquidating on Craig's List. As well a lot of the fuzz kits and psb boards to build cool fuzzes they are pretty easy. I would think even with the taxes you could buy the boards and instructions from a kit site (they run around $10) and get the components in country.

I also use a Yardbox a lot lately (with ultrafuzz or XXL and a sucka punch in front) the 4 knob version. It has a great sound and the eq is realy nice. They say it is the sound of early zepplin but it pretty much does all the bowie spyders from mars records and alice cooper. Pretty nice. It is kit wise know as a tonebender and there are lots of varaitions on the kits.

I find that stacking the fuzz with an overdrive either before or after really makes the difference in getting a quality lead sound. most fuzzes are too greasy to be able to play chords very well, but that little overdrive boost helps tame and focus the sound, while making it nice and sharp.

that Lil' Big Muff is a great and inexpensive pedal. I like it better than the other big muffs I've played. it's really bassy though, so I've got it matched with a couple brighter fuzzes/overdrives in my board.

the best fuzz I've ever used is the zvex fuzz factory, hands down. holy shit is that thing cool. so versatile.
kerble is right.

Fuzz factory is amazing. It is difficult for shows as it seems to be very difficult to zero in on the same sound twice if there is a big temp humidity difference. I assume this has to do with the wide variety of controls and the geranium transistors. I have the similar problems with other geranium transistor fuzzes but with less knobs they are easer to reset.

yes yes. I do love the 'wild card' nature of it. it's kinda like my Juno 6. it never really sounds the same twice, but it's always pretty easy to make it sound good.
