Much is being made of sip vs. belt as a means of delivery. This ignores sniffing altogether, which is a crucial step in the appreciation of a decent whisky. The aroma will carry notes which don't necessarily come across on the tongue, and will combine with the taste to provide an overall effect which is far more satisfactory than the taste on its own.
Shots and ice are for people who don't like the taste of alcohol. On the other hand, this sipping thing shouldn't be taken too far because you want to take enough in to coat the whole tongue. You don't get the complete taste otherwise.
Sips and belts are two tines on the rusty fork of unsophisticated puritan booze-fear which has it that scotch drinking is either a vaguely unpleasant step necessary to getting hosed, or some kind of treat. A healthier attitude, I think, is to regard it as a staple of one's diet, like fresh vegetables or meat. Barring that, at least as a friend.
