You know who else expects their pals to look the other way when they pick n' choose which laws they'll be honoring tonight?
COPS!
Are you sure it's not time to shut the fuck up? Dude was wrong, dude had weaponized his car. There was a chance to get him off the road.
The thing you say in this situation is "bravo", stupid.

Do you seriously think these guys would have listened to someone telling them "they might get caught"??
The drunk jerks might've still killed someone that night, if not themselves.
Even better was the part where they'd apparently think he was pretty cool for handling it like that. Priorities, yeah!

If one of my 'friends' did that to me I would drive to their house the second I was let out of the can and beat them within an inch of their life.
But that's just me, I really don;t expect such things from friends.
Now you're just talking shit.
Seriously.
I'm just sayin'
I was thinking about it and maybe you can get some binoculars and just sit in the window scanning the streets...waiting for someone to double park or jaywalk, or even liter....you can have a special hotline set up that dials directly to the police with the push of a button
Maybe if you make them enough money they'll award you a t shirt of something
Yer bein' a douche.

Awesome, equating
Drunk Driving with Jaywalking and Littering. Wow!
301,139,947 people in the US
around 17,000 of what they call drunk driving deaths a year
1.4 million people arrested for DUI's a year
It costs the average person 5 grand in fees to get a DUI
HMMMMMMMMMM
these numbers....they are telling me something....

You'd rather some criminal nut wanted to kill you?
My way, they would not have driven and if they did and he called the cops and they got arrested he could have said 'see I told you they were all over' and never let on it was him.

People say that the police exist to act in favor of only the rich. This is often true, but not always. When the police arrest drunken drivers, they are acting in favor of the public. I can understand suspicion of the police, but this is one circumstance where I feel like they are doing their jobs -- protect, serve, etc. The roads are dangerous enough already, don't you think?
A DUI is a major inconvenience for the individual who receives it, but there are ways to minimize its impact. For a first offense (assuming no criminal record), the person is going to have to pay more insurance, do public service, attend classes, etc.
Out of curiosity -- Are there any first-world countries that do not enforce DUI laws?
An anecdote on the topic:
A friend and I were driving to a movie theater at night. Along a dark stretch of road that moves quickly (Route 53, for those of you familiar with the Western suburbs), we almost struck a jogger. This woman was wearing an all-black bodysuit in the dead of night, jogging on a shoulderless road where cars routinely hit expressway-type speeds. My friend was driving, and he didn't hit her. But we didn't see her until the very last second, i.e., it would probably have been too late to swerve, had she been in the car's path. I figure this woman was either idiotic or borderline suicidal.
But the point -- if we had been drinking, and an accident had occurred, the alcohol would have been a factor and it would have been bad for us, specifically for my friend, the driver. It's perhaps sad that I think about a potentially fatal accident in this way. The runner would be dead no matter what -- the only remaining question pertains to the occupants of the car. I think it would be easier to come to terms with being unable to avoid a negligent pedestrian despite being in sound driving condition, than it would be to cope with having killed the same pedestrian while drunk.
That is a story about a completely stupid jogger putting herself in harm's way. Now consider what could happen to a completely innocent person when Tony fucking LaRussa falls asleep behind the wheel of his SUV.
Jesus H. The police do some terrible shit, but one legit function of their job is to pull drunks off the road.

Am I being totally puritanical to think it's idiotic to drink at all if you're going to have to drive anywhere?
How hard is it to stay sober if you know you have to drive?

Patrick - I'm sorry you've ended up losing a friendship over it, but the guy sounds like a prick. Fuck him, and fuck bars where they're happy for their clientele to drive home pissed. Your dad is exactly right. You did the right thing.
Marsupialized, not that I expect you to care, but for my two cents - you really are reaching a new low in this thread. I mean, a lot of the time your antagonistic/contrarian take on things has got some value and makes me laugh - but here you're just being a dick.

Ringo,
You already know you did the right thing and understand the consequences of your choice. Dude isn't your friend anymore. Sorry. If, over time, he can't see that you did what you did with his best interest in mind, he wasn't much of a friend to begin with. Move on.
Now you're sitting here arguing with a guy who thinks it is wrong to call the cops in any situation. I know you just started posting here so I'll offer you a little advice. With Marsuialized, you are often left with the question of whether he is really as big an asshole as he appears to be or if he if it is just his message board persona. Either way, this part of the conversation is hardly worth your time. Rest assured, the next time you want to start a thread about drug stories, fat chicks or how you need a band to open for you, he'll be back on your side. Move on.
