Amen. I’ve had the same experience with the Brazilian diaspora. I lived through the lawfare coup against Dilma Rousseff. How people on the outside saw it drove me nuts. Plenty of Jacobin types declaring the Workers’ Party was too centrist and Rousseff deserved to be impeached. For “fiscal peddling”, which involved moving government budgets across departments to avoid interest payments on borrowing. After moving back to England I often made the same mistake of assuming all Brazilians here were conservative coup mongers. They’re not. It’s extremely nuanced. I imagine this is the same with every diaspora.
I have Iranian and Israeli friends and none of them fit into neat pigeon holes.
