Chavez calls Bush a devil...

And once again Hugo Chavez proves what a power-hungry Castro-successor-wannabe he is...waving around a Noam Chomsky book in front of the UN....what a clown (and if this whole sh'bang with him and the other two addressing the UN this past week isn't enough to prove what a farce the UN is, I don't know what is). Haven't we seen enough of guys like him, and the others?

i didn't know much about jugo chavez until this last year, and actually i still don't know much about him. in fact, it would take me probably 3 or 4 guesses to name what country he represents. sure, most of us can acknowledge and agree with some of his points, and i am down with his trading oil with states and reservations, as far as i know.... but, i mean, could we get someone a little more eloquent, with as much balls, on our side please? i dunno, i feel bad for him. these days, with so much going on, i guess all days with so much going on, i don't see how anyone can get it right without also getting confused. i mean, there's always a new guy, an old book, and a crazier situation by the time you think you've figured it out.

Hitler didn't like Stalin, and neither do I, but that doesn't mean I like Hitler. He's still an ass, regardless of what he thought of Stalin, who was also an ass. Maybe this is an extreme example, but Chavez disliking Bush doesn't make Chavez a good person. This is all I mean towards you.

To a point, I agree with you, and could find cases where an opponent of Bush would not win my favor, but my admiration for Chavez is rooted in more than enjoying his insults of Bush. I want to see a resource-strong Latin American nation defy the IMF globalists and provide a less manipulative source of capital for its neighbors. Because I know that US intelligence will try to sabotage any people power in the southern part of the hemisphere, I will praise any growing counterbalance against the US empire, and will not be driven off course by juvenile demagoguery or by reports of human rights abuses or electoral fraud that don't surpass what we have at home.

Gaining power and holding power in the shadow of the U.S. will require some dirty pool by the liberators, and I accept that.

Jeff Cohen at AlterNet writes:full column here

Conservatives were quick to lash out at Hugo Chavez for calling President Bush a "devil," but that's exactly what Rush Limbaugh was calling Democrats only a few years ago.

Across the U.S. political and media spectrum, there was wide agreement yesterday: Name-calling and personal attacks are bad for national and global dialogue. Prompting the unity were Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez' comments that President Bush was the devil incarnate, "El Diablo."

Among those exercised (and exorcized) about Chavez' name-calling were some of the loudest name-callers in American media today -- including Rush Limbaugh and other rightwing talk hosts. Limbaugh tried to equate Chavez' remarks with the alleged Bush-bashing that comes from top U.S. Democrats. In case you've forgotten, it was Limbaugh who ridiculed Chelsea Clinton, then 13, as the "White House dog."

It was Limbaugh in 2001 who routinely referred to Democratic leader Tom Daschle, literally, as "El Diablo." Along with "Devil in a Blue Dress" theme music, Limbaugh would carry on at length about how Daschle may well be Satan in soft-spoken disguise. Bellowed Limbaugh in July 2001: "Just yesterday, as Bush winged his way to Europe on a crucial mission to lead our allies into the 21st century...up pops 'El Diablo,' Tom Daschle, and his devilish deviltry, claiming that George Bush is incompetent." (Months later, Limbaugh started describing Daschle more as a traitor than a devil, who'd decided to "align himself with Iran, North Korea and Hussein.")

Just got around to seeing this- it is great. Damn, I had forgotten how much of a slithering punk Ari Fleischer is, but watching him lie through his teeth all over again during the US-backed Carmona coup was like having hot coals applied to my retinas.

Note to all the Chavez detractors who dismiss him by saying he's just the leader of a personality cult: you're all revealing your latent racism towards poor, brown people. Your implication goes like this "poor + brown= stupid, and that's why the Campesinos 'fall' for Chavez"- the allegation is that they can't figure out the issues, so they herd up like sheep for the populist hero. So wrong and bigoted to think like that. The Chavez supporters are doing the same thing the glorious and revered American upper middle-class does: voting for their financial interests ( tax cuts from the GOP ).
