But isn't this what Pete Doherty wants? He's clearly not out there for longevity. He lives like a rock star and wants to die like one.

I don't get that either. I own all the Libertines albums and I've heard Baby Shambles enough times. Baby Shambles isn't as good as Libertines. And the Libertines aren't the greatest rock and roll band I've ever heard. Their first album is pretty good, but nothing out of the ordinary. Perhaps their live shows are legendary, I wouldn't know I haven't seen them live. I'm guessing most of the praise is due to successful PR work.
