The sentiment is currently yo-yo-ing between "poor Benazir, poor Benazir's kids" and "she let her bastard husband gang rape girls and murder her brother."

There are already suggestions that the government's security provisions were lacking - and judging by the reaction of the people on the streets they're holding Musharraf responsible.

That would be an easy way of killing her, wouldn't it? Leave a gaping hole in security and giving a wink to whichever nutters of the day are on the ISI's payroll... Given the corruption, mendaciousness, conniving and general unpleasantness of Pakistan's military, I would be unsurprised if some scheming general put this together.

As my mother has just said, now lots of people are going to start killing lots of other people for the most obscure of reasons. The mire of corruption and violence in the country never ceases to astonish me, despite the inequalities and grudges being laid so bare to see. An outsider might not believe in the incredible well of culture, thought, learning and debate within Pakistan, so frequently is it visited by noisy catastrophe.

The country needs some politicians who are not completely self-serving. I have the horrid impression that this rules out virtually the entire political elite of the country.

What conspiracy could be more complete than what we know already? Purv is a dictator, he or someone like him let the guard down (perhaps even someone in Bhutto's camp), and desperate assholes continued the killing. It could only get weird if Bhutto let herself get killed, so she could become an influential spectre like Oni-Wan Kenobi.

I doubt Rikki Cloxx has anything better than that.

Heard the news this morning on NPR. I was pretty shocked that Bhutto was assassinated. I don't know much about Pakistan, but this is a terrible thing for any nation. I hope there's wide-scale protests and what not, something to shake the system up.

Spark's already alluded to it, but it requires no massive stretch of the imagination to see a degree of complicity with elemets of the ISI and the military. It's long been know that there are people that number among their ranks who symathise and support the extremists.

When terror suspects are able to escape custody in circumstances as farcical as THIS, you can't help but be a tad suspicious.
