"Stating that a record producer has fired a drummer is like stating that a mechanic is changing a tire on a car, or a butcher has sliced a piece of fat off an otherwise lean piece of meat. These are simply different aspects of a specific job. In any system, if something isn’t working right and it can’t be fixed, you have to get rid of it, right?"
Yeah, not a big Hole fan, but I'll take the swerving energy of Live Through This over the glimmer of Celebrity Skin. Indie rock production is encouraging and supporting every member of the band to do their best. Corporate rock is (was?) telling anyone who doesn't play professionally enough to fuck off.
Funny that they completely avoided discussing Ozzmosis...

After doing 'Ozzmosis' with Michael Beinhorn producing I didn't care if I never made another album again. There'd be these fucking mind games. He'd have me singing all day, and then I'd get three quarters of the way through and he'd go: 'Your voice sounds tired, let's pick it up tomorrow. And I knew that the next day he'd go: 'Your voice has changed, let's start again.' But Tim was different. He has incredible patience, just like Randy did."

Yes. Soundgarden has some interesting arrangements and I like the mood - just can’t get past the banshee wailing. With some economy and editing, they could really have (had) something.

Cornell and Eddie Vedder both have a propensity to howl all over the spectrum - melodies with way too many notes and oscillations. I remember that horrendous ‘I’m going hungry’ song they did together, which is a prime example of this.
Yep which is why I can’t with either of ‘em

Up until and included Badmotorfinger there's a lot of wailing (me don't like either) but Superunknown has a lot less and DOTU specially has very little. In fact I don't think there's wailing on any DOTU song. I read at the time doctors told him he was destroying his vocal chords or something so he stopped wailing both live and on recordings.

most annoying interviewer ever. he'll make an off color comment and before beans can roll with it, he'll say, "Just kidding," just a straight up ass-kisser, with no technical questions. just no pushback whatsoever. but he does get into the drummer problem this time.

"twiggy is one of the most incredible musicians i've ever worked with."
"the idea that you can make a living doing this is completely outlandish."
"[the ozzy record] was painstaking. he found out he was sick so we didn't see him for 3-4 weeks."
"it started with ozzy. i said you have to go home so the drummer can do his best work."
"anyone who hears this record isn't going to give a solitary fuck about your feelings."
"hole said, 'you can't fire her,' before i even mentioned it. so do you know something i don't?"

anyway i thought the questions could have been better, but there were some nuggets in there for soul asylum and rhcp folks.
