I can say from experience that the Mackie 32/8 sucks.

The pre amps and eq sound harsh and un musical. It's an annoying desk.

Are these the only choices? I know the answer is never Mackie.

Can I cheat, and say THIS?

i'll second the Soundcraft. i've recorded in a studio a few times that uses one of these, and i've never had any complaints. Mackies i think are sort of the SM57s of the mixer world: they're not terrible, but you could always do (a lot) better.

i used a tac scorpian at college about 6 years ago. it wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't particularly good either.

the pre's were a little rubbish, but i thought the eq was ok.

i don't know the electrovoice console so if i had to choose then i would go with which ever of the mackie or the tac were in better shape. which ever one you get you could do a whole lot better for the same money.

i would look at soundcraft or soundtracs. i own a soundtracs midi pc24 which has really nice pres and a nice eq, and best of all cost me £300. i used a soundcraft spirit studio desk at another college about 4 years ago and that was ok (definately better than a mackie if you ask me) and that was an ok desk - really crunchy pres.

basically i wouldn't touch anything on your list with a ten foot poll because you can get way better stuff in the same price range.

well if your refering to a dda interface then thats a whole different kettle of fish.

dda made some pretty nice consoles in their day, and the two main chaps from dda went on to found audient, whose consoles are excellent.

i don't have any hands on experience with a dda interface so i could't give a personal recomendation, but i do like dda boards.

http://www.recordingconsoles.net/consoles/consoles.htm have a look here and check out the dda interface. is this the console you mean?

from what i know of them, go for it! provided it is in good condition then it should make a fine board.
