Music for my wedding.

I'm getting married this summer and I need to submit a list of songs for the DJ to play.

I'm really stumped on this one. My family is rather conservative. Her family are very progressive, but they mostly listen to stuff like the Grateful Dead.

Nearly all of my favorite music would send the guests screaming into the street.

Can anyone suggest songs that don't suck and won't frighten the people at the reception?

I am all up for reviving this post. I'm getting married too this coming fall and need some ideas.

HELP!

What about musicians? I'd rather give some one with some underground street cred cash to play flamenco/classical/minimal guitar at the wedding than some professional pony-tailed berklee school of music jazz dude with really long fingernails.

a friend of mine told me she went to a wedding about ten years ago and p.w. long and/or mule was there playing an acoustic set of originals and many covers. this could still scare a few people, but how nice!

what a dilemna. it's going to be tough to make 3 generations of two different families and friends happy here. ugh.

maybe there will just be no music, or eno "music for airports"
labradford, where are you when you're needed?

maybe video projections? i dunno.

anybody seen/heard good music at weddings? ideas?

That didn't really help. What I need is songs to be played during the reception. We have the backround music.

Really, thanks for the help guys. we know you had the DJ play Barry Manilow, Billy Joel, Celine Dion and the Cranberries at each of your weddings.

First off, the mistake may be that you're hiring a wedding DJ. That could be a big one.

When my wife and I were married, we made a set of five (5) mixed CDs to play at the reception. It was a combination of music we both liked, that seemed suited to a celebration, and included things that were universally appealing and generally inoffensive. That DID NOT mean we had to play any Manilow or Cranberries, but it did mean that we weren't playing any Big Black or Crucifucks either.

There was alot of Loungey jazz and crooner stuff from the 'golden age', some 70's funky stuff like Parlaiment, Sly, some disco. There were some Bobby Darin, Sinatra, Ella, Martin Denny at the beginning. As the night went on, it became more rock, with some more disco and 80's new wavey club shit thrown in. By the end of the night we were playing heavier things.

Here's a clue-in for a wedding reception:people like to dance....a lot. If you don't play music people can dance to - really dance to - they will leave, or sit around glassy eyed.

Good luck!
