Did you know that wine from the USA often has water added to it in order to weaken it's potency?
Apparently this is not allowed elsewhere.

Apparently even the higher end California wines are not aged in real wooden barrels, but in huge metal vats. Wood chips are then added to imbue the wine with the barrel taste.
This is also forbidden in most European countries. It may even be prohibited under certain EU quality standardization laws.

I'm only buying French, Spanish and Central/South American wines at the moment.
Reasonably priced New World wines tend to be very, very boring...

Trust me, there is nothing boring about NZ Sav Blancs and Chars at the moment.

Time to reveal how much of a snob I am - I won't buy any wine that isn't French, Italian or occassionally Spanish. I've drunk the odd nice New Worlder but they're so hard to find, and all the brand names that line the supermarkets are just sweet and tasteless. Europe all the way!

You could also argue that resonably priced old world wines tend to be too young. You'd be hard pushed to find burgundy at the same price as a Californian or NZ Pinot that wouldn't need a few years... Whereas I'd be happy to drink 2 or 3 year old Pinot from either area and not pay through the nose.
And Chilean & New Zealand wines are very interesting... especially a Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough.
