usb or pci microphone preamp

Is there such a thing as a USB or pci unit that is just a microphone preamp and nothing else? Cool edit pro wont pick up my mic input on my motherbaord sound card as its virtually configured regarding i/o. I need it to do a room sweep to setup my active speakers.

What do you mean by "virtually configured"? Is it part of a joystick interface or graphics card?
Try Asio4all - search on google and install it.
Otherwise, yes there are USB preamps, although most have an audio interface built in too. Try M-Audio.

Hi,
Its on the motherboard and all the inputs and outputs are mapped in software to the required function - so that they can cram 20 inputs worth of functionality in 10 actual holes.
Thanks for the links will check it out! I do need the digital audio interface as well, as you say.
