Hi and thanks for reading this. A kid I used to work with at a music shop just bought a bar/nightclub and I'm going to help him get the sound system right, and then probably do sound there on the weekends. There's a tiny room behind the stage with a little window in it, used to be where the old owner would go and sniff lines inbetween bands.

Anyway the now owner has it in his head to PUT THE MIXING BOARD IN THIS TINY SHITTY ROOM BEHIND THE STAGE!!! I did sound there for the previous owner and I am the proud parent of Tinnitus, cuz she had the mixing board RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE PA SPEAKER!!! If I hadn't been so desperate for money beer and a nightlife I wouldn't have done it.

Now, putting the board BEHIND THE STAGE is better for my ears then in front of a 1200 watt PA, but it seems totally stupid. He thinks that we can use a walkie-talkie and holler, "HOW ARE THE VOCALS?" "OK, MORE BASS!" etcetera, back and forth from soundroom to bar. As if that's any way to mix live sound. Not to mention that if a band's onstage there's no way to get in or out of this room! I'm having a hard time telling him he's totally retarded cuz he's a nice kid and my potential employer, but if I got some semi-professional feedback it would help tons. Thanks in advance.

***JEEZ CRISE!!! SO I SENT THE KID A COMPILATION OF EVERYONE'S FEEDBACK, AND HERE'S HIS RESPONSE:
"i am well aware of how shitty it is to have the sound guy behind the stage, i went to school for sound engineering as well, but our ghetto solution is to communicate through walky talky with someone on the other side, once the board is set up its minor adjustments through out the night, and im going to try and find a board with FLS on each channel. as shitty as the set up would be if the board was infront of the stage there is no room for it, and it would get fucked with more by drunk people, which would cause feedback and destroy equipment. so the sound guy must suffer for the greater good..."
WHATEVER! SO FUCK THAT JOB...***

Ive seen sound desks in some pretty wacky places in clubs, but behind the stage is a new one. And mixing via walkie-talkies? How space-age!

Anyway, yeah, Ill back you up. It's a really bad idea. Make that room into a dressing room or a place for bands to throw their gear or something like that. Build a booth somewhere out front for the mixer. Y'know, so you can hear what youre mixing.

I think it's a great idea except for the walkie talkies. AIM, email or cell phone text messages would be way more "now".

Yeah, you need to tell that kid he's a moron and keeping the board behind the stage is not a good idea.

Walkie Talkies... wow. *csshhhs* MORE KICK! *chhshhshh* 10-4, Good Buddy.

why don't you guys just get two computers and instant messaging?

in fact, you could even get computers for the stage and IM the guitarist to tell him to turn down the fucking overdrive.

seriously, though. i don't think there's anything wrong with pointing out matter of factly the flaws in having the sound room behind the stage. there are a lot of cons to it that speak for themselves, i think. i mean, if worse comes to worse you can tell him to just frame out a fucking 4x8 space and then carpet it. shouldn't take very long at all.

I don't know what you mean, like a sound booth? Not sure I follow you but thanks, I got so much feedback from this and other forums that he's going to be overwhelmed and probably do whatever I tell him. If not, I just won't do the job.

yeah basically make a soundbooth somewhere else. i mean it's not hard to frame out another tiny room elsewhere.
