Does anyone know the difference between a V9 and a plain old SVT?
I know some v9's were like guitar versions of the svt with distortion and reverb...... but some are definitely for bass and are 300w/6 6550/ blah blah blah/just like SVT. they look (and weigh) the same too. is V9 just what ampeg decided to start calling the SVT around '74?

2I'd check a schematic first. I know that when Ampeg changed hands somewhere in there, the new owners had a bunch of semi-completed items laying around and started putting stuff together and rebranding things into new amps. Just because these V9 amps have 6 6550's, doesn't make them an SVT. I've got the Ampeg book at home that goes into details on some of these bastard amps, i just don't have it with me now.

3i'm pretty sure the v9 is just the svt w/two more knobs, for buzzy preamp "distorto" circuit and reverb
i don't think too many of them were made....i mean, a 300W gtr amp. you know?
someone told me they saw andy gill play thru one when gang of four played in seattle way back when. he mentioned it b/c it was the most excruciatingly loud yet great thing he'd ever heard. this guy. that's what he said.

4Just looked into it further and sure enough, the V9 is an SVT power section with a new preamp section geared for guitar. What does this mean? Not sure, since a preamp section is pretty critical for getting the tone of an amp. I'm sure it's a cool amp though. I've hardly found an ampeg I didn't like....tube ampeg that is.
For the record, I've got a 72 VT-40, a 66 fliptop, a 66 Jet, a 73 GU-10 and just sold an SVT and two V-4 heads.
