So I stumbled across this earlier...

It looks similar to the SM7s of old but is that where the similarity ends? Any ideas?

I used an SM7 on the top of a snare at a friend studio the other day and it sounded very good. He'd stuck an SM57 on the top (that'll be popular around here) but I suggested trying the SM7 as it wasn't being used. Unsurprisingly (I guess) it was a vast improvement.

The Shure website documents the differences somewhere. Im pretty sure its as simple as an improved hum bucking coil.

Anyway, the differences betwen the SM7, SM7a and SM7b are, according to Shure, quite small.

Well that's good to know. Might well consider a purchase of said mike in the future when increasing my humble recording set up at home.
