Harmony Korine's a polarizing fella. I couldn't find a poll about him specifically, so here it is.

genius is the wrong overly used word, though he's talented, and interesting. but given those choices, i have to go with charlatan.

there can be no waffling in a genius.

There's something kind of funny about him (in an entertaining way) but I haven't liked any of the movies I've seen by him. Crap, I guess.

I don't feel qualified to comment on his attributes as a human being but as a film director, an unrelieved disaster.

I found myself nodding in agreement at the telly the other night when bequiffed cineaste Mark Kermode struggled to find anything good to say about Mister Lonely (a film described in a newspaper here last week as 'so pointless and irritating that after a while I literally found it difficult to breathe') and had come to the conclusion that he had been right all along in questioning his abilities when others were hailing him as the saviour of independent cinema all those years ago, 'he can't direct and he can't write, he can't edit and he can't construct a narrative'.

He can occasionally come up with an interesting shot or conceptual gimmick but no amount of Sonic Youth patronage or ironic Dio t-shirts can divert from the fact that he has absolutely failed to deliver anything approaching cinematic red meat.

Confidential to Werner Herzog and the peculiar talent that is Samantha Morton, what on earth are you thinking?

Rubbish!

Julien Donkey-Boy was a decent film, I thought. Had a lot of great moments anyway.

Don't particularly dislike Korine, but I fully empathize with people who do (he's something of a sketchy director and it comes with the territory).

Either way, I couldn't imagine ever describing him as a genius. (Maybe that's one of the things that makes him contentious, all the hipster hype he's generated.)

Not sure how to vote here.

Could a mod edit the options to just crap and not crap? No one is going to call him a genius, but I'd be interested to see how many of us think he's not crap.

I met him in passing last year. I was completely surprised with how friendly, funny and approachable he was. I've been told that he wasn't always like this.

I just saw Mister Lonely, and like my encounter with meeting him, it took me by surprise in a great way. While still being as weird as his earlier movies, it's gorgeous, funny, and has a lot of heart. Seriously, it's a beautiful movie.

Not Crap
