Can anyone explain exactly how playing Avril Lavigne, Celine Dion or Nickelback in a dentist's office enhances the experience, and would therefore attract more customers than a dentist who operates in silence? I would much rather suffer the incessant whine of the drill than the incessant whine of lavigne, dion, morissette et al.

Last time I got a root canal I listened to New Zealand band Shihad's Killjoy record. Seriously good listening to cover up the drill sound. Killjoy is fuck'n great record for anyone whose idea of heaven is a cross between Meantime era Helmet and early Killing Joke. Plus the production is gritty and raw... All analogue direct to tape.

sort of un-related but:
1) I was stuffing my face in pizza hut once, and Sonic Youth came on over the loud speaker... pretty strange.
2)My girlfriend and I were playing hide-and-go-seek in Sears, and Radiohead came on. Radiohead in and of themselves aren't surprising to hear on the radio or in a store even. But it was one of the more akward numbers off of Kid A. So, it was a bit strange. I would have expected one of the radio #1 smash hits or something.

there used to be a kmart by my house
it was the shittiest, worst-run kmart on the planet
but i needed a new phone, and there it was
so i'm in there buying a new phone, and i'm walkin' by the electronics
and the blue light goes on and starts to spin
it's a blue light special on blank cds or something
and they start playing 'beginning to see the light' by the velvet underground over their shitty in-house p.a.
the guy at the electronics counter was a goth kid
short stringy black hair, large earrings, eye makeup, bad skin, and a bright red kmart vest w/a name tag on it
he looked utterly unhappy w/his lot in life

I was getting a filling replaced once at the dentist and they gave me a little transistor radio to listen to during the procedure which only lasted a few minutes. I immediately tuned in the local college radio station and they were playing a song from the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack, one of the faux-glam songs that the fictional character sings. Just as the nurse starts turning the gas and the first line of the song creeps into my ears: I am through w/ all that gas.
Right when the song finished the procedure was done.
One those moments, best dentist trip ever
