On the strength of the "All Good Naysayers" song I downloaded a dozen or so mp3s hoping to find guilty solace in some lushly orchestrated indie-pop. Instead it seems mostly like weepy plinky-plink-plink crap. It reminds me of a more radio-ready Appendix Out or Elliot Smith (who I was never big on anyway) without the ballast of wit or manic depressive heroin-angsht.

And I think it's time someone came out against what I will call [b]"œindie-banjo!"

I bought Michigan the other day. It sure is weepy, but it's lovely. It's all I've wanted to listen to for a couple of weeks now.

Really like this guy. _Seven Swans_ was a great record. The new one is all about Illinois.

"Gun Street Girl" features a resonator guitar, not a banjo.

It's also all about being good. I'm somewhat convinced that this guy will never make a bad record until he gets to Texas or Florida.
After that, they'll be awful.
Hopefully he hits up Maryland before he gets bad.

I heard the Michigan record and liked it enough to play it a few times. I then saw them in Chicago (I actually went for Nicoli Dunger who opened the show and was great) and was surprised at how jokey they were. They all had silly outfits (I know, I know...I am saying that...) and were acting kinda smirky. It was really off putting. There was a fantastically beautiful woman in the band though so I did end up staying for about 6 songs on that alone. All and all it was a disappointing show that made me from then on hear the record differently... more ironic...not as genuine. That was too bad.
