Currently researching an assignment on this topic. I must take a side here, justifying its continuation or arguing for its abolition. I'm not too knowledgeable on the subject, so I figured asking a board as helpful as this one might be a good idea. Please, give your opinion and/or links to some good sources.

Rick Reuben wrote:CRAP, it hurts the people and not the leaders. If Cuba was an out-of-control warmaking state like Israel, I'd probably support a trade embargo, but Cuba is not.
There's a lot of pro/con Cuba talk
in this thread.
I'd say it has outlived it's usefulness, if it was ever useful in the first place. If anything, it actually helps the Cuban leadership solidify it's control over Cuba, since it gives everyone in Cuba a common enemy they can all rally against.
Judging by what happened in Eastern Europe after trade was re-established with the West, if the same thing happened between the US and Cuba, it would do a lot more to cause the Cuban government to change if trade was officially sanctioned, then it does now with the embargo.

A bunch of special kids handles the Cuban debate more maturely than many adults.
The Kids of Widney High wrote:There's an island 90 miles from Miami
Where palm trees sway in the breeze
You could dance and gamble all night if you want to
And do just about anything you please
But there were people poor and needy Who were left out of the fun
The casinos were built on their backs But now their time had come
There are two faces on Fidel (4x)
He was a man who's ideas were different
He believed in the common man
The poor looked up to him just like a savior
They believed only he could understand
But if you had money and privilege
He was gonna take it all away
So all the rich people packed their bags
And headed for Miami, USA
(Chorus)
I finally have a job! But he took all my money, man
I can eat! But I can't vote!
I can go to school The newspapers are full of lies
I finally have a house of my own
Taking from the rich and giving to the poor, just like Robin Hood, I'm goin to Florida
Fidel gave everyone food and shelter
But the people he saved weren't free
In Havana, no homeless, no borrachos
But no more Easter egg or Christmas tree
He's lasted through blockade and invasion
But his cigar is smoked to the end
What will happen to Cuba after Castro?
Will they be our foe or friend?
The Cuban embargo: CRAP, get over it America.

CRAP. Cuban women are sexy and should have ready access to all the good things in life no matter what politics are involved.
If the US would make that it's mission statement, I think we'd all be way better off.
The US: Making sure the sexy women of the world get what they need
They can look at the women of each country and decide policy based on their attractiveness.
Of course that means a full on carpet bombing of our up till now strongest ally England, but you know...gotta break a few eggs.

For a few years now, Mark Cuban has been causing me to rethink free speech.
If somebody can prove to me that the girl modeling that shirt isn't a lousy lay, I'll buy one of those shirts and eat it.
Embargo: Crap.

In my defense, I think my ability to disseminate between what will help me in this thread and what won't is quite good. For example, while amusing, I'm hardly going to argue for the scrapping of the embargo based purely on the attractiveness of Cuban women. Though a lot of things in this world make less sense than that...
