Meshes Of The Afternoon kinda blew my mind. Need to watch it again. Lynch definitely owes her a buck or two.

...or three, or a few million. Very Not Crap. At Land and Meditation on Violence are as good as Meshes of the Afternoon. I haven't seen the one on Haitian voodoo but would like to.

Totally out of the dark I borrowed from a friend a Maya Deren DVD with all the above mentioned films, plus more, I had no idea who she was. Looks like I'm in for a treat.

She came out of nowhere for me, too. A feminist, DIY filmmaker making very bizarre movies in the 1940s.

I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as those 3.

And those movies of interpretive dance were kinda boring, though admittedly well-lit.

I'd say she's an important filmmaker for Meshes alone.

Absolutely NOT CRAP.

Not Crap at all.

"I make my pictures for what Hollywood spends on lipstick."

Shame her films have been removed from ubuweb. I should buy that DVD.

Claude Cahun? Also Not Crap in any case.

Glad I downloaded those three shorter ones from there a few years back, then. I'll get the DVD anyway.
