when we recorded our first and only album to date (analog, a friend recorded it), we encountered a kind of 'masking' (i don't know if i'm confusing my terms here) of the frequencies from the floor tom and the bass guitar. when we mixed it, we couldn't allow the proper bottom to come out in the bass because it disappeared into the floor tom sound. we had to EQ it with less boom than i wanted. kind of frustrating.
we're gonna record again in the near future--possibly with the same gear and engineer friend. any advice on how to avoid this?
many thanks,

floor tom-bass guitar frequency scuffle
2Well, one thing that might work is to make sure that the tom isn't tuned to any of the notes that the bass uses too much. Another thing you may try is panning the tom to one side or another to give the bass more space. Also, using a little bit of compression on the bass the make it stand out more could work. Though i'd try the compression last for this particular problem. Hope this helps a little.

3as i recall, it was the low E which was the problem. thanks for the tip. we'll try the tuning fix first. i know that our friend isn't a fan of using compression, maybe because he doesn't have a decent compressor, i dunno.
