Coming back here is a pleasure that has made me feel like a fumbling amnesiac over basic posting tricks. This thread is for questions and advice for anyone trying to figure out stuff, whether new to here or not. I'll start with advice FM A_Man_Who_Tries posted on avatars:

You can upload there. I think avatars have size (90x90 pixels) and size (6k max) restrictions.

This was helpful, thank you. I'm on a Mac, so used Preview's resize function under 'Tools' to shrink the picture to 90 by 90 pixels, and the 'Export' function to reduce the quality of the Jpeg to that it slid under the file size restriction.

For me, any tips on searching for posts in the archive would be gratefully received. My usual UTFSF tactics have failed me, and this is probably user error.

As a matter of etiquette, would those FMs now posting under a new name be willing to state who they were on the 'old' forums? I'm old and easily confused.

FYI, if you're trying to post a Youtube video and want it to show up in the post, use the tags and replace them with [media][/media].

Was the same on the old forum, so no change there!

Just posting the link worked for me, actually, same for bandcamp links.

Yeah, for youtube I've eventually learned that doing absolutely nothing other than posting the link works fine (as in, the link gets embedded)

You can upload an image to a post via 'attachments', and then select 'show inline' for it to appear in your post. Image size limit is 256kb.

Useful if you don't want to piss about with uploading to a third-party host.

Open that image in a new tab, or 'Save Image Link', and tag that URL

As a rule, look at the end of the URL. You want to see an image file format i.e. .jpg, .jpeg.... If it's a '.com' or similar then you're linking to a web page, not an actual image.

As mentioned in another thread, would it hurt that we agree to make sure any post content is easily findable from hereon in?

i.e. Provide artist/album title when linking to a cover, video link etc.
