Stands in an undefined region between horror and social commentary, not unlike the film Us, but perhaps better, IMO. I liked it. Season 1 may warrant a second viewing. REALLY violent in spots, though.

It’s well-filmed and genuinely horrifying.
The Tap Dance Man (Henry’s hallucination/demon/doppelgänger) is particularly good.
The “origin story” b/w episode probably would have made a good short film by itself.
No spoilers, but after the end, it kinda felt like 10 hours of relentless Black suffering with no point or message other than the suffering itself. That seems gratuitous at best in the US in 2021.

Yeah, I'm interested in more perspective on that, because I had a lot of "whoa, seriously?" moments with this one.

“No point or message” is a little glib, in retrospect. The show tells us in its opening exposition about its message - redlining after the Great Migration - but it doesn’t develop that aspect of the narrative very much. The focus seems to be on putting the Emorys through hell.
