I've been here since 2004. Initially joined after going to the Shellac-curated All Tomorrow's Parties and hearing from a friend that 'there were some cool people on Albini's forum'. That turned out to be true, pretty much.
I got more involved via the PRF Songwriting Challenge and made some solid friendships through that. People were incredibly kind about each other's songs and it became a fantastic sub-community within the PRF. Everyone was very supportive and encouraging despite my total lack of musical ability or experience and I ended up writing around 70 songs over the years that it ran. Every single one of them was terrible (aside from the handful of collaborations which were a bit better)
Pretty much on impulse (and after the kind offer of a floor to sleep on) my lady and I came over to Chicago for the first PRF BBQ in 2009 and I had a pretty good run of attending PRF events for the next few years. The last one being Milwaukee in 2017. The following year we had a kid (actually round about 9 months after the BBQ!) and travel stopped being a thing we could do. Was starting to get excited about the possibility of bringing him along when he was old enough and then the COVID happened. Then we had another kid, so no BBQs for us for the foreseeable future.
Facebook has been a good replacement for keeping in touch with PRF friends, especially those who have drifted away from the forums as life goes on. That said I'm very happy to see the PRF back in this form and I hope it continues to attract people back over the next few months.

I joined the first forum after lurking awhile after seeing it displayed at the Tape Op Conference in 2003.

I joined PRF back in 2007, I think.

Back then I was called "Cocksocket" and IIRC someone accused me of Asian hatred (I've always been ahead of my time) because someone thought "enframed" was making fun of the fact that many Asian people have trouble with "L" sounds. I don't know why anyone might have gone there from "enframed," but they did.

Plus, "enflamed" is a stupid handle; no one needs to know about my hemorrhoids or VD.

I grew up obsessively reading/memorizing the Guiness Book of World Records, collected every publication until the house burned down (which I still attribute to faulty electronics of a Boss MT-2)

One day I was walking by The Metro - on my way to that Mexican joint with the badass horchata - as a drunk was being thrown out of a Jesus Lizard show. We got to talking for a minute, and he said "oh if you're a record nerd you gotta check out the PRF."

The rest is history.

Straight up nerdery. I was a regular on the OLD Papa M forum. Someone (rottentanx) shared a link to the old sendspace(RIP) thread. I lurked and downloaded for a while, joined, stuck around. It's been over 16 years now.

I’m in a band with FM Trey. He was always talking about the forum at band practice, and I finally joined in March 2010. Played the Drug Church BBQ and recorded at EA that summer, which led to meeting a lot of the people on the forum irl.

I’m mostly here for the music, and I tend to avoid the pissing matches.

I was an extremely over prolific poster from early 2000s, and general nuisance on the old boards during a lengthy period of highly questionable mental health. However, the song writing challenge that ran for a good while is (for me) one of the best internet-related things of all time. It was tremendous. I know my brother (also old fm) feels the same way about it.

It is lovely to see the forum back.

I'm ready for the next round of songs whenever they begin!

(honestly, back in college this was the first internet forum I ever saw where people weren't writing like they were typing on a phone. I was well impressed.)

I've been posting here since almost the beginning in 2003 and even though I recorded at EA a couple times during those years, this place was still 'a thing on the internet' to me. Former FM Marsupialized was pretty motivational around 2008-9 making real life events (or musical output/collaborations) around Chicago where I lived at the time, which was when the whole PRF thing really solidified and I started meeting people IRL. The PRF was quite prolific for the next few years, though with anything good came a lot of drama as well, so I kinda took a step back unless bandmates really wanted to play a PRF event or whatever. After moving around a bit, I've mostly reverted to my hermit ways but it's nice having the forum back in a low key way (so far) as a technical resource and a way to find out about new things.
