Goddamn this pandemic.
Double goddamn this middle age metabolism.
We're trying to get serious about getting active over here. Anyone have a home exercise thingy that they like that won't put a second mortgage on our house? No, we're not getting a fucking Peloton. When I want to stare at a screen where an unreasonably buff dude yells at me for an hour, I watch pro wrestling.
Looking at upright elliptical/bike combo style shits. Thanks.

2nd hand exercise equipment generally doesn't hold its value very well. Years ago I found a spinning bike in Mundelein for $150 at a warehouse that sold a lot of used gym equipment and I got years of good use out of it. Something like Play It Again Sports might be worth checking as well.
(though there's a chance things are in short supply in pandemic times)

My girlfriend just bought a Joroto spin bike and loves it. Seems sturdy and was easy to assemble. They don't have an elliptical though.

i got this one:
https://www.soletreadmills.com/elliptic ... elliptical
found it at play again sports right when the pandemic hit for about $399 - consider it $500 because i had to pay another $100 on Dolly to get it moved.
very worth it.
the big thing is making sure the thing can handle your size/height. if you have longish legs, the majority of the cheaper units have such a short stride length which can be very uncomfortable.

I also suffered the consequences of a newly slower metabolism. I almost caved and got a Peloton, but opted for a weight bench + some dumbbells instead. Combined with a better diet (+ timing my eating), I've been seeing good results over the last two months. That said, its always good to keep your cardio in check. There seem to be some decent (= well reviewed) exercise bikes a tad outside of your price range ($650-$700) on Dick's Sporting Goods and Amazon.

My dude, I have been on and off DDPY for a few years now. It's great, but I've been sticking to regular yoga of late!
So we ordered a Sunny magnetic resistance belt drive guy that was a little over $300. Knocking on wood!

Your best bet with exercise equipment is always buying second hand. OfferUp and Craigslist always have a lot of stuff. As you can imagine, it is VERY common for people to decide they need to get in shape, go out an buy a machine, and then a month later they quit. So, there is usually an abundance of barely used exercise devices on the market.
For the past dozen years or so, I've always had some sort of elliptical that I religiously use 4 days a week. I've bought all of them second hand. They typically last about 3-4 years under that type of use. The key is getting one that the previous owner barely used. The good news is that the vast majority fall into that category and it's pretty easy to tell how much they've been used by looking/trying them out.
The one I have now is a Bowflex M3 Max Trainer and I really like it. It's a hybrid elliptical/stepper. It has a smaller footprint than a normal elliptical (which is nice if you don't want it taking up a ton of floor space). When I got it about 2 yrs ago, it was retailing for about a grand, but I got it used on OfferUp for $500.

Ok so I know this thread is for the sub-$500 range, but indulge me, this is a generic exercise question/issue!
So we have a Peloton and with it come a series of training videos (for a monthly fee!). I done some of these and I kind of get the pattern where it's a warm up and then a series of variations on intensity on speed that comprise some kind of interval training. Peloton kind of spoon feeds you this but I bet you can use a cheaper bike with an iPad and a series of YouTube videos to do something similar.
Anyway, for those who do this kind of stuff - are you all motivated by this? I'm real hit or miss with it, the music selection sucks and the instructors have a bubbly intensity I'm not always down with. Generally I'd MUCH rather do the scenic rides where there's just scrolling landscape awesomeness, and I vary the resistance and speed manually. In terms of wattage output, or kJ, I think is the real metric, I'm coming out about the same per 20-30 minute ride as the instructor led ones, so why not just do it myself? I really know nothing about interval training and whether I'm missing out be just winging it here?
