The band, not the axe.
I like some of Mit Gas, can't remember anything off of Anonymous, probably haven't listened to the first one and can't remember anything off of two last ones. Apparently I have listened to them and they have a good line-up, but on the crap side they have Mike Patton (whom I once adored and now can barely stand).

I'm not sure if the awesomeness of Duane Denison outweighs the pretentiousness of Mike Patton.

Based on these factors I guess they are Crap, with some Waffles.

I saw them on their first tour and they only had enough songs to fill about 40 minutes, so they added 5 minute noise interludes after every other song or so. Dumb.

I went from being a Patton admirer (around 'California') to being over his shit within the span of about two years. The other guys are fine but have better bands.

Crap.

Only familiar w/ the first two releases but I was of the opinion that the band was driven by Patton and Duane pretty equally, and that the debut (which I liked) was a 50/50 of Blue and King For A Day.... Strong dynamics, great sense of tension and release. Not great, but good. Mit Gas was a bit diminishing returns (saw 'em live around this time; so-so), still haven't bothered with the rest.

Not essential listening but the quality of the output gets 'em a NC from me

This band never did much for me. I like Duane but not with Patton.

Great band imo. The self titled debut, Mit Gas, and Tonic Immobility are standouts. It's cool to hear Duane do his thing with Stanier drumming. I understand the Patton debate, but generally I find his range of vocal delivery adds more than detracts from this particular band, providing some ambience and spookiness where appropriate. Not crap.

C'mon, even if you like these guys individually, it's not for the music they made in this band. Be honest with yrself.

CRAP

A weird band. Individually I love all these guys, but a lot weaker than the sum of its parts. As a band it just doesn’t gel often. Not crap, but definitely very patchy. None of it is “bad”, there’s just a lot of meh.

The first two are a lot of fun. Captain Midnight is fantastic. And I think I’d listen to Stanier drum the phone book.

I tried listening to the first one and Anonymous today, but couldn't get over the insincere snarling of Patton on the first one and the cultural appropriation on the latter.

I agree Captain Midnight is a fantastic song. And I do appreciate Mike Patton as a creative force and probably as a human, I'm just not enjoying his creative input most of the time. I'd rather hear a less talented but more honest vocalist most of the time.

Mike Patton would respond to some offhand comment about his band's name being "cultural appropriation" with a full blown album dedicated to said culture, huh.

I like the first one. It’s kind of a last gasp of 90s alt punk/ rock. Saw that tour in the sweaty mess that was the London Astoria. Like that legendary Mr Bungle show it was on before London’s sleaziest gay night The Pink Pounder at G.A.Y. A great night out.

I completely skipped Anonymous.

I’m listening to Tonic Immobility now… Patton is definitely the weakest link, not terrible but it just sounds like his singing on Sol Invictus. It’s kind of phoned in. Duane and John’s parts are fantastic.
