Let's see, how this story goes... a gawd sets up a universe in order to determine if the creatures he makes will burn in a pit for all eternity. The other option, in theory, is to go to lala land to be with him. But to get there, the creatures must avoid doing the things that, according to the way he made them, seem most fun and enjoyable, like having sex, overeating, etc. So gawd sort of stacked the deck in favor of the "burning in a pit for eternity" option, I suppose because he's a sadistic bastard.
Anyway, it just so turns out that even though he is omniscient, he didn't realize that basically no one would go to heaven this way, as these creatures are all already born with a sin on them. So being a forgetful, yet somehow all knowing gawd, he decides to inseminate a virgin with himself so that he can "die for our sins," sins which he created us to want to perform.
Now, he could have just changed the rules and said, "oh yeah, sorry about that, you can all get forgiveness now. I should have thought of that before." But nooooooooo..... being the drama queen, he made up some stupid rule that says that the only way his creatures can be forgiven is that he has to come down and get whipped and crucified. Then he argues with himself just before he does it, trying to get out of it, because he is so loving I guess. ( in fact, this gawd is so fucking loving that he bans wearing clothes made from more than one fabric, and bans shellfish eating, but he argues in favor of slavery, even providing a convenient pricing chart).
So because he did that, everything you ever did wrong can be wiped away by saying "Sorry about that gawd. My bad." Raped your kids? No problem. Just say you're sorry TO GAWD. Committed genocide? No worries; all of that can be erased in just a moment of true repentance. Screw the people you hurt and their ramifications; all you have to do is be sorry, and then you will go to lala land with him after you die to eat delicious cotton candy and ride ferris wheels in the sky. Nevermind that you can't see it or no anything about it, just remember that there is no meaning to anything you do on this planet, as long as you're sorry just a moment before you die.

Christianity is a bit of a broad church to reduce to a crap/not crap dichotomy, non?
What's mental (or WORST RELIGION EVER) about living one's life by the fluffier tenets of the New Testament? Honesty, compassion and forgiveness, and just being decent seem like fair rules to live by and I know plenty of people who try their level best to do this, and they get it right a lot of the time. I'm fine with that. I'm not fine with the religion when it's being wielded by some sort of right-wing crusader out to pass repugnant judgement on other people's lifestyles, see also: Good Muslim/Bad Muslim debate. I'm not fine with religion getting intermingled with the legal system, see also: Sharia law. But hey, that's people, and if it wasn't Christianity or Buddhism or whatever, they'd find some other way to act like dicks.

I agree. If you went to the doctor and asked to see someone that studied from a 1000 year old text book you'd be considered a fruitcake. Yet we're expected to offer respect to people that believe the ideas of fanatics 3000 years ago, that didn't even know what the sun was, as the explanation for creation.
