Album: Corky's Debt to His Father

I'd known of this LP a while back, then got a rip of it around the early 2010s, but only recently picked up a copy on vinyl. I like it a lot, but it's a curious little collection of songs. For (but not limited to) the following reasons . . .

- It's the only solo LP by Mayo Thompson, apparently, despite him working on tons of albums and being involved with all kinds of bands

- It sometimes seems to veer dangerously close to being "bad music" but never succumbs, owing to, among other thing, the chops of his very capable backing band

- It was reissued by Drag City who seem to have had several artists or affiliates who've attempted to make semi-similar sort of "ramshackle music," but not necessarily to as good effect (not a dig against the label)

- The cover art is kinda hilarious, but I don't know why; I have no idea what a cat named Corky has to do with a monkey behind bars

One of my favorite records ever (not a small list, to be clear). I like everything about it.

Texas freaks were always very important to me, a Texas freak, though I think Mayo Thompson was more Wes Anderson than Roky Erickson. This record is a big one and I am a Drag City lifer as well.

My favorite Mayo stuff was this and that Saddlesore song he did, Old Tom Clarke.

I revisited this album recently and was surprised how much I enjoyed it, given that I was lukewarm on it when it was reissued in the 90’s. Not crap!

I love it.
Got around to listening to it late too, and haven't revisted in a while.
When I posted about discovering it for myself finally, a friend shared this record, which I remember really liking too, though I am admittedly a sucker for Sven-Åke Johansson and the rest of the crew here:

I really like it. it's weird but seems to be pretty honest about it.

Surprised I haven't revisited this in a long while considering how much Red Krayola I listen to these days.

It's been actual decades since I've heard it (and really remembered very little?), but that's the take I fall closest to here. Surprised at how light it felt to me this time.

Really enjoyed it. Glad this poll came up to nudge me towards it.
