The World Series of Poker 2005 started yesterday with the Dealer's Tournament. This is the beginning of a six week convention of poker which culminates with the week-long $10,000 buy-in No-Limit Hold'em Championship. Last year, Greg "Fossilman" Raymer won the Championship and $5,000,000 after beating a record-setting 2575 players. This year, they are expecting over 5000 players to enter the Championship.

But that is a long way away.

Today is the $1500 No-Limit Hold'em event. Last year Scott Fischman, the best playing member of "The Crew", beat 280 other people to win $300,000.

I'll be keeping tabs on all the events over the next 6 weeks and I'll post about them here.

Ultimatebet.com has good live coverage of the WSOP, at least of the main event -- I like the guy who blogs for them.

Maybe we should put together a local tourney, shh...

UltimateBet has a page, http://www.pokerwire.com/ , where you can get up to the minute results of poker tournaments.

I'm more of a http://www.pokerpages.com person myself, and I subscribe to Mike Paulle's Poker Blog RSS feed so it comes up in my News reader.

If I'm not getting enough info there. I sometimes check out http://www.CardPlayer.com for updates. It's also fun to check their Player of the Year standings.

Last year, I watched the final table over at PokerStars while chatting w/ some guys in the 2+2 IRC channel. That was pretty fun.

Am I the only one who thinks that it's way past due for ESPN to be giving updates of poker tournaments on SportsCenter? I realize they don't want to spoil it for the people who are going to watch their coverage a few months later, but c'mon!, it's big news to some of us.

I read part of that SI article. Nothing really that new. Hopefully though, it will get even more people playing online. I'm hoping that this weekend will be a great weekend online. ;)

I've included a link to PokerRoom in my signature. I know of at least two other guys on this board who play there.

PokerRoom is still running the $6 qualifiers for the main event walter, if you wanna give it a shot. You got to play through 3 tournaments but you're only losing a few dollars as opposed to $10,000.

ESPN is currently way too busy with their Spelling Bee coverage.
