"Battle Champions" is perfect. One of my favorite records ever. Also one of my favorite recordings from an engineering perspective. Not Crap, obviously.
Wait a sec... Yep, I thought we'd done this one. It's not a C/NC poll, but nonetheless...

I thought they had to have been discussed somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
While skimming through that other discussion, I noticed the comment "they don't need the vocals though". What does anyone else think of this? I spent the summer of 2000 listening to 'Battle Champions' pretty much non stop. At first I spent a lot of time thinking the same thing (specifically on 'Time for a Game of Stick'). I thought Jay really couldn't sing, and the vocal parts seemed forced, like they randomly picked a couple songs from the record and decided they were going to add vocals regardless of if the song required them. Then, the more I listened to it, the more the vocals started to grow on me. By the end of the summer the sparse phrasing, lackadaisical delivery, and cryptic (or not) images became my favorite part of the song. Genius.
By the way, "What is Your Landmass?" is one of those songs that had it existed in junior high (before CD skipping abilities) I would have made a tape of it recorded over and over and over.

They've quickly become one of my favorites.
As Seen From Above, while now out of print, is definitely worth hunting down. Maybe we could form some sort of mass militia to have them put it back in print. Either that, or stare at them menacingly at shows. 'What Is Your Landmass?' is pure big bottom.
As far as the vocals- Jay Ryan, sing your heart out. I don't think he sings at all on the second record, and 'Spiral Bound' is one of the better ones.
they're so not crap that they're crap.
So I'm voting crap.

It is a shame that 'As Seen from Above' is out of print for the people who don't have it.
You're right about 'Spiral Bound', it's great. He does sing on a couple songs on the second record; 'Time for a Game of Stick', the one I was talking about, being one of them. The vocals are a lot more melodic (EX: 'Spiral Bound') on 'As Seen from Above', I think that's another reason it took me longer to get into the vocal songs on 'Battle Champions'.

Not Crap, and not just because they're nice guys, which they are. I especially like it when Jay sang early on. Steve once said something like Jay was maybe the only person whose singing voice sounds just like his speaking voice but, well, singing. Listen to it and it's true.
I had a dream once where Jay Ryan got real boozed up at a wedding and punched the guy from Smog in the nose and called him an asshole. That was a great dream, Not Crap on the dream too.
