My AT 4050-CM5 Has gone crazy!

1
Hey,
I have an AT 4050/CM5 that has recently gone crazy.
Seems that it is making alot of loud noizes on its own and its quite a symphony!
Mostly it is like a rolling surf at the beach sound, then makes sounds like someone playing with an old mono synth... Weird high tones that change frequency randomly / wildly.

I dont think I dropped it, but it is definately broken.

Any idea what the problem might be?
Is it worth repairing?
Anyone in NYC area that you know of to fix mics?

I know its a cheap one, but I use it all the time.
Thanks very much for any advice!

I'll third (or fourth or whatever) the suggestion to send it on in to AT.

The 4050 is definitely worth fixing. I think they are a pretty good bargain on a large diaphraghm, multi pattern mic. For a lot of things I think they beat the somewhat "standard" AKG 414...although I realize there are about a dozen variations on the 414, some better than others.

Awesome.
AT All the way.
I'm assuming you tried other cables and preamp/channels already.

Greg,
Yeah, ive definately narrowed it down to the mic itself. It does its little soundscape of noizes with any preamp / cable combo.

Looks like I will definately have to get this fixed by a "professional".
Never had a mic fixed before though. Wondering if the best plan for me is to send it off to AT for repair. It makes me think about taking a car back to the dealer...$$$. If I am right about the car / dealer analogy it seems like I might have options other than that since I live in NYC.

What do you all think about that?
Send it back to AT, or find a tech here in NYC?

Thanks alot everyone.
