The Busted Lift is a wonderful place to play. Lots of enthusiastic kids, good dark beer...man, we gotta get back there soon.

Feb 24 2006 Anywhere in KY

Louisville venues seem to vary depending on the type of music you play. Currently we have:

Keswick Democratic Club (popular for the all-ages shows, heavier music is generally here) -1127 Logan St., Louisville, KY 40204. (502) 637-9639 (No Website Available)

Old Louisville Coffee House (all-ages, tends to be more artsy type bands) - 1489 S. Fourth St., Louisville, KY 40208. (502) 635-6660

The Rudyard Kipling (awesome place to play, but kinda hard to get people down there sometimes) - 422 W. Oak St., Louisville, KY 40203. (502) 636-1311

Nelligan Hall (newer venue, I believe it's all ages) - 2010 Portland Avenue, Louisville, KY 40203. (502) 290-9357 (No Website Available. Web Contact - nelliganhall@juno.com)

Uncle Pleasant's (a personal favorite for seeing bands, 18 and over) - 2126 Preston St., Louisville, KY 40204. (502) 634-4147 (No Website Available)

Bulldog Cafe (I haten playing this place, but a venue is a venue-all ages) - 10621 W. Manslick Rd., Fairdale, KY 40118. (502) 380-0600 (No Website Available)

Headliners (Generally for bigger bands, but it's worth a shot) - 1386 Lexington Rd., Louisville, KY 40206. (502) 584-8088

Dutch's Tavern (21 and over, not sure if they're still doing shows) - 3922 Shelbyville Rd., Louisville, KY 40207. (502) 895-9004 (No Website Available)

If you don't feel like coming to Louisville, I highly recommend The Southgate House, just outside of Cincinnati. - 24 E 3rd St., Newport, KY 41071. (859) 431-2201

Hope this helps!

The Triangle, NC:

Chapel Hill/Carrboro:

Cat's Cradle: the large venue. It is big, so you'll need a draw or to tour with a band who has one. I mention it for purposes of being thorough. Smoke free! The big time. Derek does booking.

The Cave: tiny club below street level. Seems to book almost everything, but I'd stay away if you're face-slayingly loud. The room is too small for that. Band runs own sound from stage, PA is just for vocals, really. Not much money made here. Nice people, though. Tall people beware: faux cave treatment on low ceilings. Load-in is through back, so no stairs, but long push. Mouse is in charge.

Local 506: dirty rock club with liquor drinks in plastic cups. All styles. Nice soundguys but a terrible PA. Drummers--if you don't absolutely need a drumfill, don't set up on the drum riser. It's like being in another town, far from your band. But maybe that's good for you. Glenn is owner/operator/booker. Nice guy.

Nightlight: are you a noise/experimental/collage/found-object-instrumentalist artist? Here you go. A used book/record store/sandwich shop by day, at night they have the weirdest shows in town. The PA is haphazard and DIY. Someone may acknowledge you when you show up. There may be five other bands on the bill. There may be promotion. You may have to wait until Chess Club is over before you load in. Not really good [though not necessarily bad] to the bands that play there, but you will not be too weird for this place.

Wetlands Dancehall: decently-sized room, great PA, good shows. I really like playing here. Michael Triplett does booking. Good advance info, good soundguys, good bar with air hockey/pool tables and good jukebox downstairs.

Durham:

Duke Coffeehouse: on Duke campus. Not an every-night-of-the-week place, but has a decent room and PA. And coffee. Booking person sometimes changes with the semesters. Annoying load-in involving either stairs or tight hallway.

305 South: we're really hoping this works out. Right now they don't really have heat, and while it was 70 degrees last week, it does actually get cold here in the winter. This place is new, but they're trying to make a go of it despite the fact that Durham kills what it loves. Cavernous room, adequate-but-not-really-good PA, and a padded stage. Why? I don't know. The reflections off the twin garage doors at the other end of the haul might make your drummer have a seizure, so get the wedges as loud as you can. Those doors make for the best load-in in town, though. James is your man.

Raleigh:

The Brewery: Are you in a metal band? This is your club. They say they book everything rock, but it's pretty much metal and its modern cousins. I haven't been to a show there for many years. Tell me how it is if you go.

Kings Barcade: a pretty good room which has the stage oriented such that a small crowd can seem pretty big. The PA is reasonable. Most of the sound people have been good. All styles, but mostly rock music. My favorite in Raleigh. Steve from Polvo is an owner and put a bunch of arcade games in. Good restaurant next door.
The website has one of those "no unsolicited demos" warnings, but they give an email address...so it's worth a try.

Lincoln Theatre: Raleigh's big venue. As with Cat's Cradle, you'll need pull. Though they were trying to do some more indie-oriented shows last year, it doesn't seem to have taken. Back to rawk, metal, and cover bands alongside "National" touring acts. Yngwie Malmsteen is playing there this month. So there's that.

There are a few others, but these are the ones I thought most appropriate for the bands I've seen on the board.
In addition, I may be able to help out if you're coming our way. Feel free to PM.

More in Ohio:

Akron

The Orange Street: mainly hardcore/pop punk "scene" kids, though on occasion they've had some good shows with non "scene" bands. fairly easy to get into, though they have a tendency to overbook shows ad nauseum. 7 bands in a night is a nightmare when some incubus ripoff band thinks they're rockstars and plays for an hour. after a few shows, they started calling us to play. sound can range from fucking awful to pretty decent, depending on who's doing sound that night. payment is based on people saying "i'm here for band X" at the door, at the rate of 2 or 3 dollars per person. i'm pretty sure it's different for touring bands.

Annabelle's: the basement of the bar with auralex foam. literally. "backstage" consists of the room where they keep the extra food. dark, low ceiling, perfect in my eyes. the sound was above par for the setting, i thought. rock/punk/blues/metal/etc.

Square Records: this is where i saw the evens and ris paul ric. they rarely book local shows in the store, but they have done it before. they generally put on shows in conjunction with the lime spider. ex: "square records presents make believe at the lime spider"

Kent

Europe Gyro Pizza: I don't know if they have shows here anymore, though they used to book small touring bands, usually with one or two locals. they literally move the tables and you play right on the floor. The first time I played there, we were paid in pizza and coke. The second time, nobody even knew there was a show, but they let us play anyway and we took donations to help the touring band.

The Electric Community Center (ECC) :A cozy hole in the wall, with tables and couches. they have a small bar and display work from local artists and writers. they have a projector which runs during shows, usually playing trailers for b-grade horror/sci fi movies and other assorted stock footage. concerning booking, we got to book the entire bill ourselves the first time, and we tried booking another show but the owner was always "too busy" or it was "a bad time" though he was just in the back room smoking. another reputable local band had some issues with the ECC recently, but i don't know the details.

Screwy Louie's: Basically a mainstream sports/college bar complete with a steel cage and a "proper" full-size stage. The decor looks like something from a recent Poison tour. Whoever had the keys to get in didn't even show up until after the show was supposed to start, and once we got in there weren't any reachable outlets or a PA. Another band went home to get their PA and the show went on. But they have fancy lights. The ownership seemed confused by the music that night, i suppose they were probably expecting Creed covers.

Gabe's - Iowa City
www.gabesoasis.com

That being said, I've climbed those slippery back stairs at Gabe's enough to know that it would be no fun on a cold Sunday night in February.

Iowa! It's Cold As Piss!

Those stairs are fucking ungodly....

Just an FYI, this is your last year to enjoy the wonderful rock venue that is Gabes Oasis. The lease on the club is up in a year. The city doesn't want it there and the owner doesn't want to pay the price to try and keep it open. The city of Iowa City is pushing forward with its plans to further market this once amazing little hamlet to all the Kappa Phi bros.

If you haven't been there it's a great place for a show, and I've been lucky enough to see a lot of amazing bands there. Touring bands on this board should make a concerted effort to get there in the next year.

Also, I must once again say the Busted Lift is a pretty swell venue, Aaron is a good guy who does the most with what Dubuque can offer.
