Dumb as an ox, but plenty fun.

How do you know about this middling Canadian rock band? A friend's band did a cross-Canada tour with them. Not a big fan myself.

A little-known band from Canada that I do recommend is Gaffer. They were from Belleville Ontario. I loved this band. Their first album, Snow Falls like Stars (Teenage USA), is much better than the one available in the embarrassing Epitonic link above.

Their vicious combination of complex rhythmic structures with intricate playing creates expressive and often angry music. Gaffer will be minimal one minute and then they will flood you with sound. They take brutal hardcore and metal-edged guitar and twist them into math rock before suddenly slowing into an emotional, quiet, and stark section. Of course they'll inevitably launch back into full-on rock before long. Gaffer is making something unique and multifaceted that parallels the music of Antiantenna Recordings label mates The Vermicious Knid and a couple of the Japanese hardcore groups on Dim Mak.

Christ. Justin Sinkovich, please stop writing in all languages I might one day read.

I was a big fan of Doughboys as a teenager; Jonathan Cummins (of Bionic) was in Doughboys...

I think of Bionic as a more succesful version of QOTSA. It's not rocket surgery, but it's good for cleaning the ears!
