A low-cost mic to record a cello

Hi Cagacazzi,

Check out the Studioprojects B1 large diaphragm condensor (or other mics that they offer if you can afford them), it cost me £70. Great mic for the money, got it at Digital Village. I have recorded vocals with it and acoustic guitar and am really pleased, drop me a private message or email if you are interested in hearing some recordings made with it. It is awesome for male vocals, very warm but having presence and clarity, but just the right amount of sibilance, in my opinion. It sounds 'expensive'. If you do a little digging on the internet, you'll find that Studioprojects are making quite big waves with their products. Go to their site and read about the company and you'll learn why they make such great mics at such cheap prices. I don't work for them by the way, I'm just a happy customer! :D

Good luck,

Neil. :)

Hey:

On Bob Weston's suggestion, I have used and liked the Audio Technica 4051 (at a distance of about 1m). I was surprized how nice it sounded, as I was used to struggling a bit with 'cello.

The big problem with 'cello is the "wolf tone" that howls out differently on each instrument. Try to match the mic's response to the register of the instrument's loudest natural-key note.

The mic should not emphasize that register, if possible.

And it's €295 from Musician's Gear. Excluding German tax (€343 with). :D

I've had some nice results lately with the AT3060 in conjunction with an AT4033. The 3060 about 6" in front of the F hole and the 4033 above the fingerboard 'looking' down at the fingerboard a little above where the neck meets the body. The 3060/body mic gets a very nice mellow tone, which is balanced by the slightly more harsh high end of the 4033/fingerboard mic. I know that's not exactly low-cost, but you can get 4033's for a couple hundred US dollars on ebay, and I've been pretty happy with the 3060 that I got for 350 bucks.
