Gramsci,

You seem to be looking for something with a sense of composition, that possesses beauty in a structural and tonal sense.

Not just "undisciplined squads of emotion", to use a line of T.S. Eliot's.

Classical music?

Art Pepper, John Coltrane and other jazzmen have made music which works in this way for me. It is often intense but their music conveys real feeling.

Codeine "Barely Real"

Neil Young "On The Beach" and "Comes A Time"

I would second the Adam CR American Music Club recommendations; My favourite record of theirs is "California" though it can be hard to find.

Other people may sneer, but really if you're going to wallow, the first two Red House Painters albums are really good wallowing music.

(I think all their albums are entitled "Red House Painters", so the album that starts with "24" and the album that starts with "Grace Cathedral Park")

Serious wallowing music. Kind of like wrapping yourself up in a quilt sewn by Morrissey which is embroidered with the poetry of Sylvia Plath or something along those lines. Good playing and song arrangements as well.

I'd also suggest Brubeck for a lift. Anything from the Take Five record.
Also anything from Jazz Impressions of New York. I personally find
the song Take Five to be a little played out, so perhaps you might want
to check out Paul Desmond's Take Ten - Desmond played alto for Dave.
